The answer is to have it sent to a UK address, and then get it sent on to you
This isn´t really a problem. I was just trying to save a bit of cash via the exchange rates. You can also buy it from Argos and PC.World but the same price. I thought price fixing wasn ´t allowed?

I am sure they would use someone like Fedex - it certainly would not go in the post.

Amazon are usually pretty good but they seem to be making a real pig's ear of this "International" Kindle system.

What if you have your kindle in your back pocket and then sit down on it?

Confused
As I see it you would only be able to 'share' books with a friend if their Kindle was registered to your Kindle account. When you buy a Kindle Amazon give you an address ie billgates @ Kindle . com and your Kindle will be 'bill's Kindle'. You can have up to 6 Kindles registered to the same address/account, 'bill's
2nd Kindle' etc.
Any book downloaded will be available for anyone on that account to read.
Not all books are as expensive as £4 - £12. Many are cheaper and many are free (Classics such as Dickens). Once you have read the book you can remove it from the device and it is then archived for you to re download any time you want.

The kindle is the same size as paperback book so unless you have large back pockets it is unlikely you would sit on it. But if you did, I imagine it wouldn't do it much good.

Maybe I'm just too traditional, but my idea of a cosy room is one filled with book shelves. I can browse through my books, take them to the secondhand bookshop and exchange them for different ones, or buy more books from carboot sales. I take a book with me to the airport when I fly. If I leave it lying around or it gets nicked then it's only a minor inconvenience and not another insurance claim.
I read my books in bed, on the toilet, on the beach (how does a Kindle handle sand?)

I could imagine being on holiday or sat in a hospital waiting room for hours or at an airport for a couple of days due to delays and having almost finished the book on the Kindle, when the low battery light starts to flash (assuming a Kindle has one of those) and having to speed-read to get it finished quickly

Each to their own, but nah, give me a tatty old paperback anyday.

For me it is both. Usually when I go on a fortnight´s holiday I would take six or seven books, so a Kindle would be ideal for this.

I can see the sense in that.
I just hope that new publications are still in book form as well as electronic.

You make some good points there.
I may yet buy a Kindle at some stage, but I'm a long way from being a convert from books.

.
The wifes kindle only needs charging once a month, you wouldnt have that issue unless you were stuck in the airport for a very very very long time

I guess it has changed then, my OH bought a laptop from Amazon UK ( just before Christmas) with a Spanish address & they shipped it here.
The end of our road was closed off when it was delivered & the nice man walked it all the way up to our house
Some items even have free delivery to Spain.

I bought a Kindle about 18 months ago. I got it from the U.S., it arrived via DHL with no problem.

As I'm registered on amazon.com I download my books from there. Occasionally I can't access a book because it's not available in that zone but that happens so infrequently that it's not a problem.

The payment is in dollars which I've always found to be an advantage against
the euro.

It is easy to read in sunlight.

The charge lasts for almost ever though one should remember to keep the net connection turned off as this does eat power. You only need to have it on when you're searching, buying or downloading. I tend to order my books via my computer and then download them when I have my Kindle on.

The disadvantages are that books can't be passed on to friends and they are expensive (i.e. the same as in a hardcopy bookshop) - this is because of a deal that publishers struck with the e reader sellers in advance of their becoming popular. Very annoying!!

Overall, I'd recommend the Kindle but it hasn't replaced 'real' books in my life. They're still piling up around the place! I carry it with me all the time and can happily read when standing in line, waiting, travelling etc.

This is exactly the reason why I was looking at the US site because of the exchange rate. I thought I would be getting a better deal.

Thats good to hear then. We'd given up ordering from them unless we were going back to the UK as last time it just said it could not be despatched to us.

Somethings can't be sent, but I think it's usually only some 3rd party bobs, not stuff straight from amazon.
I have been trying to order some coloured coded chopping boards for the kitchen, but no one will ship them here
But...
Just this minute I have had my nikwax techwash & reproofer turn up on the door With free delivery

UK advertised price is £110 at the moment, we have one each, been in constant use since November 2010, NO PROBLEMS, excellent value for money.
