OK you would only need to download any title once and swap machines so there is a small saving there.
There is no need to swap. Any books ordered get sent to any Kindle on the same address (up to 6 Kindles)
My wife and I both have Kindles. We're very impressed with them. The only down side we have found is there is no way of seeing how much of a chapter is left other than 'turning' the pages till you find the end. Also some publishers are price fixing and setting Kindle book prices much higher than the paperback price, much to the annoyance of the authors as they are not getting any extra payment and Amazon have to abide by these prices. Indeed some authors are bypassing publishers and putting their books straight on to Amazon at a low price.

Let me get this right....

You pay over £100 for a Kindle, then you have to pay between £4 and £12 for the contents of a book to be downloaded?
Can you then swap that "book" with your friends? Or would they have to download their own version? Can you copy the "book" to your pc?

What if you have your kindle in your back pocket and then sit down on it?

Confused

You can get free software to download kindle books to your PC
If you have the kindle in your back pocket and you sit on it, it will probably break.

If you go on holiday or are just out somewhere and want to read then the kindle is better than having to carry a book with you

There is software available that you can load onto the kindle apparently that allows you to download books from anywhere

My daughter is a writer and has her books with a publisher but has now decided not to use the publisher in future but to publish her new novels direct with Amazon. The main thing is that she then has control over them rather than the publisher.

I have an older sony pr505, I bought it over here secondhand.
I have been very happy with it. It doesn't have wifi, a touch screen or anything fancy but is comfortable to read, the battery life was pretty naff to start with, but now it has been used for a while it has improved.
Up to date books are horrendously expensive to buy but there are thousands of older one's that you can down load for free. The sony is not tied to any system & is excellent for PDF's as well as books.
Your library is on your PC & you can hold loads of books on the reader, it takes two memory cards as well.
If you look at alternatives to the kindle, look at. If it's not a touch screen that you have a page turning key on both sides (L & R ) that you have a page marking system, that when you Finnish reading it remembers the font size you are using.
Amazon have excellent service to Spain. I have bought loads of stuff

OMG................just scared the life out of myself. I was on the Amazon.com site trying to check out this customers business by placing an order so far but because Amazon were already holding my bank details. I found that I had accidently placed an order not just for one Kindle but for TWO!! Thank God there was an option to cancel.

Ahh ... OK, well putting my ex Customs Officers hat on .... if it comes from the States then you run the risk of paying duty and local (VAT) tax on it. Like anything you buy from outside the EU, if its a new purchase then theoretically it IS subject to duty. You wont be able to tell looking at the Amazion site because its nothing to do with them. Its the Spanish authorities that decide

The reality is that you may well get away with it. You wont know until it arrives though because it just depends on if it gets picked out or not. In the UK they check a percentage of packages coming through the mail sorting offices from abroad, dont know what the plan is here

I've bought two things from the States. One I got charged on, the other got through.

Dont forget though, as I said, if you buy off .com then a "my kindle" account will automatically be set up for you, and that will be set up on the dot com site. Depending on whos experience you believe, you wont be able to download from the .uk site.

No, Amazon make a deduction at the checkout for an "Import Fees Deposit" to cover potential import duty.

I have no idea how you check to see if there was any duty actually deducted but even if there was not I doubt that you can get it back from Amazon.

Since there is no saving involved and if you only want the basic WiFi version I cannot see why Amazon are making it so difficult to buy one from Amazon UK and have it shipped to Spain.

How is it possible for them to do that? They are in a different country to where the goods will be delivered. Do they use Fedex or someone like that for international shipments? That would explain it, as its usually the carrier that approaces you for a normal shipment (not amazon)

They dont ship electronics abroad. In the past I tried. I dont know if its changed, but it sounds like it hasnt
The answer is to have it sent to a UK address, and then get it sent on to you
