However… some older people have got no chance of learning Spanish, people with learning difficulties won’t learn it, deaf people will not learn it, is it a written law to speak Spanish if you live here ? Try going up the Stratford road in sparkhill in Birmingham, hardly anybody speaks English.

too many people are quick to jump the gun on this forum it is pathetic and sad to be honest, everybodys individual situation is different, some people are lazy and too arrogant to learn Spanish yes but a lot of people simply cannot learn it, just because you speak Spanish does not make you anymore of a resident then the next man who dont speak it who is also a resident im afraid

romanians, Italians etc learn Spanish very easily because they already speak Latin languages and Russians and Ukrainians, Scandinavians etc learn Spanish quickly because they very rarely have English as an intermediate language to get by when they get here so are put in the deep end straight away and are forced to learn it fast

and lets have it right. English is the easiest language on earth to learn

this thread is about the driving licence situation, if they decide that a straight swap is not allowed, plenty of driving schools are doing the theory and practical IN ENGLISH

Get over it, wow

That is another (good) reason that monetary minimums comes into effect for the 3rd world UK citizens now in Spain... Higher earners will at least try to speak or able to afford lessons of the language of their immigrated land...

exactly my point is it not ?

some can.. some cannot

everybody is different

it is not a legal requirement to learn Spanish. Nobody is obligated to

They have just opened a brand new medical centre in Valencia, specifically for expats. It is not a big issue to the Spanish obviously

should they decide to say no to a straight swap of driving licences, the choice is there to go and do it in English

good luck to everybody

I am sorry but those of us who do speak Spanish are no more elite or more privileged than a resident who does not speak spanish

these threads get more and more bizarre every time I log on.

people must be so bored. Its like its a competition of who can sound more politically sound and correct

11 Easy Languages to Non-English Speakers to Learn
‍

Germanic Languages

Germanic languages originate from the Indo-European family, containing many of the common languages we know and love today. They include languages like Greek, Swedish, Danish, and even English! For those who already speak one of these Germanic languages, the following languages will be easy to learn.
‍*The following is listed in no particular order*
‍

‍1. English

‍# of speakers: 983 million
Overall easiness: 8/10

You're probably not surprised by this one. English is the international language used for entertainment, politics, business, and more. Given how accessible it is to learn, many people from around the world are at least proficient in the language. This makes it easier to go from beginner/intermediate to advanced level rather quickly.
‍

‍2. German

‍# of native speakers: 129 million
Overall easiness: 6.5/10

German is rooted as a West Germanic language, like English, and those who are somewhat proficient in English, Dutch, Yiddish, or more will have a much easier time learning. For example, notice the similarities in German and Dutch in the example below: "What came first: the chicken or the egg?"
‍

3. Norwegian

‍# of native speakers: 5 million (2014)
Overall easiness: 6/10

Most people wouldn't be able to recognize a Norwegian accent right off the bat. Main reason being, it's not a very common language that's portrayed in the media, unless you're from a Scandinavian country. Overall, it's not vastly different from its fellow family languages, but given the lack of resources to learn and practice, it can be harder than most.

Russians might struggle with English

Romanians might struggle with Chinese

Spanish might struggle with Afrikaans

so on and so on

more to point every individual is different,

you cannot just condemn people just because they live in Spain and do not speak Spanish

laughable

The thing is mate, this thread should be about the driving licence situation not people getting their knickers in a twist about people who have not changed licences yet or they don’t speak Spanish to take a test etc

people should just mind their own business to be honest

my friend applied for his residency late December 2020, he was away working all the time and couldn’t get it done, they did not grant him residency until June 2021 due to stupidity from the town hall saying his padrón was from January 2021

how was he supposed to exchange his licence ?

so now if they tell him he cannot do a straight swap he will take the tests IN ENGLISH

its a simple story really

Close this thread and make a "sticky" i guess they call it in forum talk as 2 posters have taking it way off the original "helpful" topic of islanders driving in Spain.

I think it is worth it, as many will not move here if they have to learn Spanish to drive here...

Perhaps a link to learning resources or helpful information in how others have learned Spanish may be helpful, I’m 60 and don’t find it particularly easy to learn, I can see why people get daunted or put off by the learning process

Really not a fan of the ignorance towards people who don’t speak Spanish.

Will be people out there who are really in love with Spain hence the reason they moved here, love the culture, abide by all rules but really struggle to learn the language

it aint their fault !!!

Should they choose to take the driving tests in English then fair play to them I hope they all pass

Those who take them in Spanish and pass then pat on the back for them too

Makes no difference

What happened to live and let live eh ?

For goodness sake. I leave you alone for a couple of hours and you start shouting the odds. No more driving licence threads will be opened until a definite decision is announced.
