A killer who boasted he was the "hardest man" in town has been found guilty of murdering soldier Matthew Boyd in Powys.

With Russia snapping at NATO's heels and much of the Middle East and North Africa in turmoil, a leading strategic analyst has urged Spain to see the value of Gibraltar as guardian of the Mediterranean.

Professor Julian Lindley-French, Vice-President of the Atlantic Treaty Association, argues that the Rock is not just a vital adjunct to Spain's economy, but also vital to its security. He says Gibraltar's importance to British, European and the security of a wider world cannot be overstated.

Britain Slams Spain Over 'Violation Of Sovereignty'

The UK government has accused Spain of "a clear violation of UK sovereignty" by sending boats and helicopters into British waters off Gibraltar.

Ministers said repeated incursions are "completely unacceptable and unlawful under the international law" and pledged to urgently raise the matter with the Spanish.

The international row broke out after Spanish state vessels chasing suspected drug smugglers made several forays into waters around Gibraltar in the past two days

Foreign Office Minister Hugo Swire said: "We understand that the Spanish were in pursuit of vessels who may have been committing crimes

"However it is completely unacceptable and unlawful under the international law of the sea to enter our waters without notifying us.

"These repeated incursions into British Gibraltar territorial waters are a clear violation of UK sovereignty by another EU country and we will be raising this as a matter of urgency with the Spanish authorities."

Unless you were away from Gibraltar on Sunday,(4/12) you will know that a LOT of rain fell. In fact, it has now been confirmed as the fourth rainiest day in Gibraltar since records began.

According to the MET Office, 156 mm of rain fell on the airfield between 9am on Sunday and 9am on Monday.

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has told the Wall Street Journal that Britain’s exit from the EU offers Spain an opportunity to push its sovereignty aspirations over the Rock.

Gibraltar would only be able to remain part of the EU if the Rock accepts Spain’s co-sovereignty proposal, he added.

Four OTs among ‘worst corporate tax havens’, Oxfam says

The charity has pinpointed Bermuda, the Cayman Islands, Jersey and the British Virgin Islands as serious offenders when it comes to offering unproductive tax incentives and extremely low corporate tax rates.

The 46-page report, entitled ‘Tax Battles’, made no mention of Gibraltar, which has worked hard for many years to ensure compliance with EU and global financial transparency initiatives.

The 15 worst tax havens identified by Oxfam included Bermuda, Cayman Islands, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Singapore, Ireland, Luxembourg, Curaçao, Hong Kong, Cyprus, Bahamas, Jersey, Barbados, Mauritius and the British Virgin Islands.

The Spanish Foreign Minister says Spain’s policy regarding Gibraltar and Brexit negotiations has not changed. In his first appearance before the Foreign Affairs Committee, Alfonso Dastis said any agreement arising from the Brexit negotiations, which could affect Gibraltar and its relationship with the EU, had to be agreed bilaterally between Britain and Spain

Another report on the speech by Spain’s new Foreign Minister

Sr Dastis set out Madrid’s traditional position on Gibraltar, arguing that the Rock was a colony that undermined Spain’s territorial integrity and must be decolonised through bilateral talks in line with UN resolutions.

Reflecting on the forthcoming Brexit talks, he said Spain would “not undermine the unity of EU member states” by insisting on bilateral agreements “for the benefit of this or that interest”

This is important because although Spanish political groups are agreed on the core issue of sovereignty, they have differing views on how the Spanish Government should approach relations with the Rock.

The PSOE puts emphasis on dialogue and cooperation, while other opposition parties such as Podemos and regional parties in the Basque Country and Catalonia even offer support for the right of Gibraltarians to self-determination.

“Our efforts must also have as a focus the interests of Spanish workers in Gibraltar and the socio-economic development of the Campo de Gibraltar.”

La Linea affected by drop in the pound following Brexit

The drop in the pound since the Brexit vote has had a negative impact on La Linea’s economy, according to a study reported in the regional Spanish press.

It found the salaries of the over nine thousand cross-frontier workers had been affected, removing over €15 million from circulation in La Linea, especially in hospitality and commerce.

Gibraltar has a yearly impact of nearly €700 million on the regional economy, according to the study, which stated that Brexit posed a danger to the pillar of La Linea’s economy. The study was carried out by the Mancomunidad de Municipios together with the Gibraltar and La Linea Chambers of Commerce, La Linea’s Association of Small and Medium Businesses, and other organisations.

If Spain insists on Joint Sovereignty, let's just agree and be done with it. Let us just tell them that we know that they are in a desperate situation. We understand that their politicians are corrupt and that the people are unable or unwilling to vote for the better of two evils. We know that their folk are working for a pittance and below the breadline in a lot of places. We know that they rely heavily on the EC which is struggling to keep its own head above water . We know that their educational system is not uniformed throughout their country.

But most of all we understand that everyone wants to live like Gibraltarians and who wouldn't.

Gibraltar has a brilliant society. The standard of living is higher than average. The government is there for the people and seems to be doing its job ( Bitch and moan as some might, but compared to other nations Gibraltar is five star excellent). It has a growing society. It has excellent educational standards. It is self supporting and it has a community spirit like no other. Gibraltar is historically important. It is located in a sunny disposition ( as estate agents would say) and it is financially sustainable.

No wonder that Spain wants a piece of the action. The only way I can see that this is ever going to work is if both sides agree to this joint sovereignty idea.

How about if we say "Ok you have joint Sovereignty from Wednesday next month", Spain becomes Gibraltarian

THE UK’s only continental border is with the Southern Andalucian town of La Linea de la Concepcion, which developed as a dormitory town for Gibraltar and gained the Charter of a city in 1870

The Municipal Government of La Linea has just published a study on the impact for the City of Brexit.

With a population of 63,352 (more than double that of Gibraltar) it has the highest unemployment rate in Spain (35.33%); 10,000 of its citizens including non-Spaniards who live there, work in Gibraltar and bring home €97,500,000 a year. In other words it exists largely because of the economic engine of Gibraltar and, in turn Gibraltar’s economy depends on the free flow of people and goods via the border and to a great extent, the services provided by Linenses and other inhabitants of the Campo de Gibraltar.

According to the latest Fletcher Report commissioned in 2015 by the Gibraltar Chamber of Commerce Gibraltar imports goods and services from Spain to an annual value of £380,890,000.

Would anyone in their right mind want to prejudice this? Surely well-meaning politicians on all sides are working to improve relations
