‘Guardia Civil’ union wants to know who authorized agents’ presence in Gibraltar

There has been a twist in the controversial visit to Gibraltar of two ‘Guardia Civil’, dressed in uniform, to attend the Birthday Parade and Garden Party to celebrate the Queen’s birthday. The men’s union are asking questions to the Spanish interior ministry.

Expressing surprise for such a development, the union has made the point that it should be the ambassadors of Spain who should represent Spain outside its borders.

Gib avoids blacklist as EU unveils corporate tax reform

Gibraltar does not figure on the list of the 30 countries most often cited as harmful tax havens by European countries, it emerged yesterday.

The European Commission published the list as it unveiled an action plan to reform corporate taxation in the EU.

Cayman made the list! Now all the EU has to do is persuade the world's international trading companies and banks not to do business here... The EU people don't seem to perceive the irony in their use of the word "harmful" to describe low-tax regimes. I'm sure most entrepreneurs believe that it's high-tax regimes that are harmful.

Good point.

The plain fact is that the self serving EU is becoming less and less competitive in Worldwide markets as it openly admits and continuing to tax companies into oblivion or causing them to move elsewhere is simply the wrong answer.
Without its huge tax income and resultant handouts or bribes it would soon lose what popularity it still has and continue it's downward path even faster.

Trying to build an EU federation to match the USA unfortunately seems to be the number one priority at whatever cost, though built on such weak and wobbly foundations with economies collapsing all around its ears and needing to be constantly propped up, it is obviously doomed to failure.

Here are the average corporation tax rates for various bodies showing that far from 'taxing companies into oblivion' company tax rates in the EU are actually lower than average.

Incidentally the rate of corporation tax in Germany, the most successful country in the EU, is high - at just under 30%.

Gib row stalls progress on air traffic control - Times

Plans to improve labour relations and prevent air traffic control strike disruption are being blocked by Spain in its long running dispute with Britain over the sovereignty of Gibraltar.

The Times reports that Europe’s five biggest airlines have demanded action from the EU to avert summer travel chaos caused by air traffic control strikes that have caused thousands of flight cancellations already this year. Airlines such as Ryanair, easyJet and the International Airlines Group are concerned that air traffic control strikes, airport monopolies, travel taxes and the soaring cost of security checks are damaging the industry.

Airport costs are truly crazy, My wife recently paid 350 Euros for a return flight to Nice via Barcelona with Iberia. @200Euros was Airport taxes.....
Taxes to pay for security checks that are laughable;- An acquaintance of mine always carries ceramic combat knives in his belt, and where you can have small valuables stolen with ease;- my wife on a previous flight from Malaga and a 1500 Euro bracelet. Where you can buy in the shop only to be told that you can't bring it on board. Where the services are crap, Try and get a coffee in Zúrich after 9pm. Airport shops prices, the sky is the limit... Masirah airport in the early 80s was my kind of airport, a wooden coral and a wooden pole defining the departure and arrival Lounges and armed soldiers for security!!!

Agree. European countries get the bulk of their taxes from individuals and small businesses, not big businesses. Depending on how many taxpayers the business employs, they can negotiate their corporate taxes down to near zero (e.g., German auto makers), lobby for [arguably, unnecessary] protective subsidies (e.g., agriculture, energy companies) or use European tax loopholes to pay virtually nothing. In the end, it's the individual taxpayer that pays the bill. World's highest VAT is a good example of that.

Fiats' Italian operation is a very good example of this.
