Eyebrows raised as Guardia Civil Officers accept invite to Ceremony of the Keys

Eyebrows were raised Thursday evening as, for the first time, two Guardia Civil Officers in official uniform, turned up to the Queen’s Birthday Parade at Casemates.

GBC understands that the Guardia Civil have always received a courtesy invitation to the ceremony, which is reviewed by the Governor, but that this invitation has never been taken up. But onlookers were surprised to see the two officers, in ceremonial uniform and headwear, line up among the guests, and even salute the British National Anthem.

The Parade marks the Official Birthday of Her Majesty the Queen. The Parade Commander was Major Jamie Allan, and music was provided by the Royal Gibraltar Regiment Band and Corps of Drums.

If anybody can see off the ridiculous Decolonisation Committee, Fabian Picardo can. I met him at a Commonwealth human-rights seminar in Gib in 2004, and was most impressed. That UN Committee is packed with time-servers. They know very well that all Britain's colonies are there voluntarily. Gib, Cayman, Bermuda, Falklands - all of them would be dead meat if they went independent.

Huge increases in parking charges near the border, I think the previous charge was 2 Euros for a day.

This will affect tourists but they won't care too much no-one minds paying a few euros for a day visit.

It won't affect most Spanish border workers as they mostly live in La Linea.

It will badly affect expat workers who mostly live away from the immediate area and drive, park and walk.

Quite an astute move by the Spanish I think.

The 360 minutes maximum is of course less than the working day for most people, this will cause some problems.

Jun 15 - Picardo Gets C24 Chairman A Plane Ticket To Gibraltar – “The Gibraltar Ball Is Now Firmly In Your Court”

The Chief Minister brandished a first class plane ticket at the end of his address to the United Nations’ Special Committee on Decolonisation (C-24) in a bid to convince its Chairman to visit Gibraltar.

“It is booked for the 8th of September this year so that you can arrive in time to see for yourself the celebrations of our National Day on the 10th of September when we celebrate the first referendum in which we exercised our right of self determination. There is no possible impediment now to your visit. We want you to see and understand our reality,” he said
