BRITAIN’S first Muslim free school will be given an ultimatum this week: fire its board of trustees or have state funding scrapped.


A senior Whitehall source told The Sunday Times: “The board will be told by the Department for Education [DfE] this week that they either all step down or have their funding withdrawn. It will be a showdown”.

TRUSTEES who run Derby's controversial failing Muslim free school are believed to have been told to step down and let a sponsor take over – or face it being closed.

It is understood they are being given a chance to save Al-Madinah School by resigning as trustees, though if they decide not to move aside the Government will cut the school's funding and effectively force it to shut.

But the bureaucracy involved will mean it will take up to a year to close, leaving children in a school that has already been condemned by Ofsted as "dysfunctional", "in chaos" and "inadequate".

so another batch of kids will be running around without a proper education, once again failed by "The System".

IMO such schools should never be allowed to open in the first place, all the nation's education should be to a set curriculum with the same schooling and exams across the nation.
none of this rubbish and most definitely only one exam board, stopping heads from selecting an examination board that will give them the most passes.

Education of our children should be for the future of the country and faith based schools such as this shold be banned - although Catholic schools appear to have consistantly turned out well educated individuals.

My ex-husband was educated at a school run by the Irish Christian Brothers, who had the reputation of being absolute sadists and the stories he told of how they treated the pupils certainly bore that out. His parents would never take any notice as they were devout churchgoers and would not listen to any criticism of a priest.

My father also was brought up a Catholic and educated in Catholic schools, but married a Protestant and had a lifelong dislike of the Church because of how he was treated at school.

Hopefully they are better now.

I was brought up CofE but was sent to a Catholic primary school run by nuns. Sadistic, evil bitches.

The whole concept of faith schools is divisive and anachronistic. Tony Blair championed them and the current lot are following on with it for some reason that completely eludes me.

I agree with Domino - standardise education and, I suppose, let parents indoctrinate their kids with their weird beliefs if they must.

I didn't think they were that bad once and Bil and I had some quite big arguments about it when he was here but I have now changed my opinion completely, it's something we just don't need to have in this day and age and it simply serves to hamper child development.

I'm sure they are better now. If they weren't we would be continually be hearing of nuns getting locked up for child abuse.

Snap, I was christened Methodist (long story there) but when I was approaching my 5th year and due to start at school a Catholic school being built nearby realised it didn't have enough children to teach without having half empty classrooms. So it was opened up to non-Catholics in the area.
I spent 3 good years there, although it took some getting used to the classes being split up in different directions for Religious Instruction. They never forced their religion on us "others" and it probably made me more tolerant of other people's beliefs.

yes, I could live with that as an amendment to the proposal.......

Firstly taking the one or two classes per week out of the curriculum could enable more effort to get kids the old basic 3R's - many are sorely lacking and need to become more structured at an earlier age.

But don't get me wrong - Religion is important, firstly of the faith of the individual family unit, as well as Britain being a Christian nation. Religion and Religious history is something that is important, partly because of the wars it has started, but also because most (if not all) of our morals are based on religion.

Perhaps the idea that was floated to open schools for Saturday mornings could be used to cover religion, or to provide sport sessions out of the normal Mon-Fri.

OK the fluffy bunnies (especially those who claim to be teachers) must be having a heart attack right now, but WTF. It is them that have spent the last 40 years chopping and changing, barely keeping to the core curriculum, and demanding changes. Thats how we ended up with so many exam boards and different curriculums - and kids that can't spell, can't add up and have over exercised right thumbs.
