Apart from it beginning maybe with hawks, I haven't any idea

I think I have this one.

It's the name of a 17th century architect. Hawksmoor.

I only know this because I I've just been reading a fiction book by Ken Follet which prompted me to re-read the historical facts about certain cathedrals in the UK and Europe.

HTH.

For 1.

I think that's an anagram of some part of the clue but it ends in S as the clue indicates a plural.

Yep, that's right

Part way = st (for street) encircles e.g. men

Gives segment

Hawks = sells
moor = room bacwards (from space towards the roof)

I don't think so and it would give me a word ending in 'u'.The cryptic part is Died in Battle?

I thought of fell (in battle) but it doesn't relate to cruel. Then I though of 'evil' but that doesn't make sense.

I thought also it was something to 1066, but no.

My only other thought was a three letter battle ending in L with a D in the middle that means cruel.

We need more help methinks
