Re: Moving back across the pond after a massive mistake!!!!

You don't even know where I live so you're just making yourself look silly.

Re: Moving back across the pond after a massive mistake!!!!

Your original post mentioned only Maryland.

I'm not sure what city has your ideal suburbs but DC has some pretty nice ones in Virginia (Alexandria, Mclean, Vienna, etc) and Maryland (Potomac,...

Re: Moving back across the pond after a massive mistake!!!!

So you're judging the entire state of Maryland based on some grim DC suburbs like College Park? Most of Maryland is nothing like its DC suburbs (some of which are pretty nice by the way) or any of...

Maybe - but where I live is not like Mississauga. Believe me.

Re: Moving back across the pond after a massive mistake!!!!

I guess that must be why Montgomery County is the 13th richest in the nation. All those affluent people (a quarter of whom have post-grad degrees - the highest rate in the nation) must all want to...

Re: Moving back across the pond after a massive mistake!!!!

Yep - Montgomery County, Maryland. One of the most affluent counties in the US. Look it up. :)

Re: Moving back across the pond after a massive mistake!!!!

Oh yeah - Cumbria (and parts of Scotland) are definitely the worst areas for rain. Agree there are some really grim areas in the UK and I've lived in quite a few. As usual it's all relative -...

Re: Moving back across the pond after a massive mistake!!!!

All cities have grim areas - some of the worst I've seen are in London. I went to uni in Manchester, had my first job there and lived there 6 years total. Those were among the best years of my life...

Re: Moving back across the pond after a massive mistake!!!!

Absolutely agree. People tend to remember somewhere as it was when they last lived or visited there. The same could be said of UK expats when they post views on the UK.

I've gone back to Canada...

Re: Moving back across the pond after a massive mistake!!!!

Yes - parental expectations and guidance are certainly factors. However, parents can have high expectations of their kids and provide guidance for their kids even if they have not been highly...

Re: Moving back across the pond after a massive mistake!!!!

I'm sure - the difference is that I also lived and worked full time in Canada for 7 years, bought a house there, had 2 kids there, became a PR and then a citizen, etc.

Re: Moving back across the pond after a massive mistake!!!!

A very crude and overly simplistic view. Many parents who are not academic, and can't help their kids with their school work, are still able to teach their kids the value of hard work among other...

Re: Moving back across the pond after a massive mistake!!!!

Yes, exactly - but parents don't need a degree to teach their kids the value of hard work.

Also there are many types of talent - intelligence is but one.

Re: Moving back across the pond after a massive mistake!!!!

Not really - exceptions prove it can only be a generalization at most rather than a universal rule. I certainly agree that parental education can be a factor - but there are so many other factors...

Re: Moving back across the pond after a massive mistake!!!!

Generalization is right because I know so many exceptions to this one. The biggest factor IMO is innate talent combined with determination and hard work.

Re: Moving back across the pond after a massive mistake!!!!

I have to live/work in Canada for extended periods because of my job. I wouldn't exactly classify all of those as "lovely trips". ;)

Re: Moving back across the pond after a massive mistake!!!!

We were in a similar situation. We lived in Canada for 7 years and moved back to the UK (suburban London) with 2 small daughters (pre-school age). We had a son while there and after 2 years it...

Re: Moving back across the pond after a massive mistake!!!!

I'm sure many people have had lovely trips back to the UK for Christmas. I know I have. However, that isn't exactly indicative of what it would be like to live there full-time. It's the same concept...
