Thanks for the replies but we just ended up hiring a LWB Transit and doing it ourselves... half the price of what were quoted by 3 firms. Irish Sea was like a pond too... good times!

so do they check every car on UK plates that comes through the port, or is it a random thing? I used to go across on my motorbike quite often and nobody ever checked any documents.... is it just luck...
