Re: Moving to New York with job offer and visa

In case this helps... we are in southern Maine in a 3000 square foot house so it's colder here in winter but less hot in summer...
Gas central heating approx $150-200 per month - it went up quite a...

Re: Leaving UK and NHS

It's been a relief to us too. There was a time when all of my daughter's Epipens were out of date because at $600+ a pair it was just too much to replace them.

Re: Leaving UK and NHS

Auvi-Q pens are free. You go online, register, they call you and ask a few questions, then send them through the post. We have 3 pairs for my daughter who has a nut allergy (and yes, we've tested the...

Re: UK- Palo Alto: What I've learnt 1 month in

I was in Palo Alto last week, with my daughter, looking at Stanford. It's a beautiful place. I had absolutely no idea what to expect and was quite blown away.

It was fun going to California from...

Re: Schools in Orange County, CA

At the admissions presentations I went to last week they said quite specifically that what they want to see is the student doing well relative to others in the same school. So it doesn't help to go...

Re: Thoughts month after moving into Bay Area

I think it depends on where you are. We have Hannaford which is excellent - I can get nearly everything there, and it's all good quality.

When I say 'nearly everything', I go to Trader Joes for...

Re: Schools in Orange County, CA

At age 12 I would keep her with her academic level rather than her age group. I say this only because at 12 my daughter was very very bored at middle school, and I now wish she had skipped a grade....

Re: Schools in Orange County, CA

I'm in the process of touring various universities including Ivy Leagues for my daughter.

It's almost a disadvantage to come from a 'good' high school when applying for college. Admissions looks...

Re: Enjoying the winter storms?

We're at 7.5 feet of snow so far this winter. It feels like most of it fell in March.

Lost power for 5 days last October.

It's been a great winter... I'll be so sad when it's gone.

Re: family visiting - trip to Mexico

I've driven to Canada a couple of times with my British parents. They did get a Canada eTA just in case, but as we were driving it wasn't needed. We weren't charged anything - they just asked a few...

Re: Does everyone get some level of cold feet?

I didn't, but mainly because I was looking after 3 children under 6 while sorting out the entire emigration process alone. I was too busy to think about anything other than what I was going to do...

Re: Road paint and cat's eyes

I drove Portland to Boston in the rain the other night, and there was a truly wonderful bit of I95 in MA where they'd put cat's eyes in. I'm sure I'd never seen them before in the US.

The rest of...

Re: Health insurance query?

Yes - we preload our HSA somewhat at the start of each year just in case, but it wouldn't cover big bills like this. In this case I guess I'd negotiate a payment plan with the various providers. Not...

Re: Health insurance query?

We have a choice between high deductible HSA (family deductible of $6k then everything covered) or low deductible policy ($250 deductible) with much higher premiums.

We go through a load of...

Re: Relocation - UK to Connecticut (Fairfield County)

Wow that's a lot of rent.

If you don't need fancy cars I think you could cut your lease bill. We have a mid-range CR-V, we put down $1900 and pay $300 a month for 15k miles a year.

I'd have...

Re: Annual leave / vacation time US

Should also add that negotiating PTO is worth a try if you have skills that a company wants. Certainly it's something my husband's company is flexible on, and they are desperate to fill certain roles.

Re: Annual leave / vacation time US

I started on 23 days PTO plus public holidays and gradually went up to 33 days. I also got 70% sick pay if I was off sick for a week or more.

In my previous job I got 20 or 25. So long ago I...
