Re: Moving to Gatineau Ottawa

True that a high proportion are only open to Federal employees and I see these, but the OP will not, so their search will be restricted to jobs.gc.ca. They won't be able to see anything they cannot...

Re: Moving to Gatineau Ottawa

This is a popular misconception. It is true of the core public service, but there are other agencies of government who are 'separate employers' who do not prefer citizenship (Parks Canada is one such...

Re: Canadian passport for a newborn

Pay close attention to the photo requirements for the newborn in the passport.

When we had ours done two years ago for our daughter, there was a requirement that there was no visible support for...

Re: Learning to drive Ontario

This is true. I learned to drive from scratch over here my thirties, and once you get through the G1, you can drive almost without restriction on a G2, aside from having no alcohol at all in blood...

Re: Tips for Ottawa move?

Ottawa has been a good choice for us - nearly 6 years and no regrets.

We live more or less downtown in the Glebe and love it here. As a fellow ex-Londoner, I found having access to all the...

Re: bongo bongo land

So you'll fight for the right to say 'Bongo bongo land'? Its just unnecessary.

Some people find it offensive, there are plenty of other things he could have said to have made the same point...

Re: bongo bongo land

Its unspecific re. country. But I think most people would assume somewhere where people have darker skins and are poorer than here.

Re: bongo bongo land

I don't take personal offence, but I think it was ill-advised.

To my mind, 'bongo bongo land' has connotations of jungles, 'savages', bongo drums, primitive, under-developed etc. Kind of a...

Re: No longer happy

Hi Lottie

Based on what you've described, I doubt you would need a working holiday visa to work in the UK and elsewhere in the European Union. I'm assuming you have a British passport? If not, and...

Re: Gay Pride flag to be flown over CFB Edmonton today

OK, so you are very tough etc. Good for you.

Gay people until very very recently were massively discriminated against in a whole load of different ways in western countries that are too numerous...

Re: And Canada's most boring city is...Ottawa! Followed by Abbotsford

I'm fine with people thinking Ottawa is incredibly boring, although I don't really understand it to be honest. Keeps the cost of living down.

I wonder what it is that people think makes a city...

Agree with what Souvy said regarding living here.

I only know Toronto from visits for work mainly, but good neighbourhoods to check out here:
Glebe, Westboro/Wellington, New Edinburgh, Old...

Re: Moving the family to Canada?

I think you are looking for positive affirmation for your move from those who have made it, and that is natural given that this is a very scary thing to undertake.

To take that step, you may need...

Re: Can you buy a car with no deposit ?

We were able to buy a new car (Mazda) with $0 down at 0% finance via Scotiabank after being in Canada for around 9 months.

Dealership originally said it couldn't be done, but as we had already...

Re: support worker jobs

That could well be charityvillage.ca

Seems to be the place to go for not for profit jobs. My wife has found both of her jobs in Canada so far from that website, albeit in Ottawa. Its nationwide.

Re: Real life Brit friends in Canada ?

There are Brits here in Ottawa, but less than I would have expected given the size of the city and the job opportunities/low unemployment.

Have the impression that many of those that do move here...

Re: Take the plunge? or sit on the beach?

Actually, the winter isn't too depressing. Its pretty sunny and with the snow on the ground, can be very bright and beautiful.

Very cold though. Might even be colder than southern Scandinavia...
