Re: Tax Status

Money in a discretionary offshore trust isn't owned by you. You have a beneficial interest in it. But your general point about not declaring income and investments is quite right: wriggle to avoid...

Re: Tax Status

The concession only applies to landed immigrants. As soon as you become a citizen you have to bring the trust onshore or suffer the FIE tax regime.

Also you have to have a lot of money in the...

Re: Job offer but EOI rejected!!!

You...

Re: Trying to open a bank account - now !

Yay! My "whiff of excrement" theory about Barclays gets yet more substantiation. How do they stay in business, let alone remain the largest UK bank?

Work to Residence visa

Good news: my Skilled Worker visa can be issued a mere 3 weeks after being assigned a case officer. Bad news, it's a Work to Residence Visa. So I've got to work in a job above $55K for three months...

Re: Time off

I should point out to those living in BC that they live further south than the UK. More so for SW Ontarians. When it doesn't get light til 10am and dark at 3pm, your enjoyment of the outdoors is more...

Re: Canada for me?

You have to distinguish between what Canadian immigrant value (qualifications and experience) and what Canadian employers value (some will value foreign qualifications and experience, many won't)....

Re: Canada for me?

Oui, c'est vrai.

I like Montréal. It's a nice city. Plenty of vitality (but, as you say, excruciating bureaucracy). But aside from that, one needs to be able to say "Bonjour hi!" to customers with...

Re: Keeping a UK bank account

Some people have reported trouble from their UK bank, who have given excuses like "it's illegal under money laundering regulations" which is complete and utter toss. If you get hassle, push back...

Re: Canada for me?

Well, look on the bright side: you'll have 19 years experience when getting to Canada since the waiting list for a Skilled Worker residence visa is 5 years.

Alternatively, lean towards Australia,...

Re: Free WIFI

Being an extensive user of wifi in Montreal, I can tell you that most Second Cup places have free wifi. Not in Whistler, alas, and Vancouver seems very resistant to free wifi. I also found that...

Re: Living in Ontario ! Don't bother ... wish I hadn't

People spending their money on what they like and sending it where they like. Absolutely disgusting. Me, I give most of mine to Gordon Brown.

Re: BBC article on UK immigration

Let's celebrate this enlightened attitude by playing a game of Throw The Bigot Down The Well while we all quaff our fermented horse urine (called "Labatt's" in Canada).

Re: Living in Ontario ! Don't bother ... wish I hadn't

No, "everyone" isn't the correct word. I don't, and I've had plenty of Karma from people who don't. The illiterate anti-immigrant immigrant bigots do, but don't pay attention to them: they are morons...

Re: BBC article on UK immigration

I know the French bit is right. From my French dictionary:

muet adj. -ette <mÿè> 1. mute adj. 2. dumb adj. (without the ability to speak; ~ animals)

Used that one quite a lot, given that so...

Re: no no no
