Yes it can be a little annoying when you look up words and have your questions all ready to ask in a shop and as soon as you step in they say "Can I help you ?". lol.

Granted we are over polite (although the original poster mentioned it as on the decline in the UK) and staff in shops etc do smile. As an example whilst being served at our local market last Friday...
