French sales suck (do your shopping in London). However, there's an outlet village close to Eurodisney called La Vallee Village (it's in Marne-la-Vallee). Easy to get to by car or train....

Avoid any restaurant that has the menu in multiple languages. You could check out the Michelin guide - it has normal restaurants as well as the starred ones. It also lists B&Bs and hotels.

Some companies in Quebec give you coverage for the whole of North America but this is for a regular car so if you need special insurance it may not be true. Maybe you could try Desjardins.

The area around Victoria and Paddington tube stations have alot of B&Bs which can be quite cheap (around £50/night and probably cheaper for a longer stay). They're even cheaper if you don't mind...

That's the starting salary for a first year post-doc and it's enough to live off here. You can rent an apartment Downtown for around $600/month. Be aware that there are few furnished places to rent...

If you have a HSBC account int he UK get them to open your Canadian one from there or at least 'introduce' you. I was told that it should be quite easy to open one if I took all my old statements...
