Highway 1 continues right around Australia and is bitumen all the way. This highway does miss out some of the more interesting areas, like Cape York. As far as vehicle/accommodation...

Moved to Aus with Aussie mother as young teenager - university there etc plus a couple of years working - moved to UK in 1997 to work, has been back to Aus only for holidays (2-3 weeks each time)...
