Question Citizenship question regarding PR Card...confused

Hi guys,

I sent in my citizenship app in June of '10. Got my booklet and letter in January that they are processing.

However, my PR card expired in October '10. I didn't see the need to renew...

I was totally confused on that. I got the "returning residents away from Canada at least one year" own/possess/use rule confused with the rule for new settlers to Canada, I think....
