Re: Proving UK *Residency* when Registering for Residency in Portugal?

No, I didn't "expect" anything. I was give this information by a government official who seemed to know what he was talking about, and appeared to speak authoritatively. It sounded inaccurate to me,...

Re: Proving UK *Residency* when Registering for Residency in Portugal?

I went to a camara in the Algarve today to inquire about the NIF. As predicted, they would not accept a US address with a UK passport. The guy did say, however, that just having some recent-ish proof...

Re: Proving UK *Residency* when Registering for Residency in Portugal?

I gotta say, guys, that while I very much appreciate the time and effort involved in these replies, I understand some of Euroguy's frustrations. I came here for practical advice about my particular...

Re: Proving UK *Residency* when Registering for Residency in Portugal?

So this explains the confusion surrounding the original "rumor." In order to get residency you DO need to prove UK (or Portuguese) residence by virtue of having to prove it in order to first get the...

Re: Proving UK *Residency* when Registering for Residency in Portugal?

Clarification, please: Do I need an NIF prior to applying for residency? This is clearly the order in which others are doing it, but I'm wondering if it is the only order.

If so, this effectively...

Re: Proving UK *Residency* when Registering for Residency in Portugal?

I was just about to ask that, actually.....

To be clear about my situation and plans: My wife and I are UK citizens, currently living in the U.S. We are going to Portugal next week to decide where...

Re: Most punitive taxes, Portugal or Spain

Another difference for some is healthcare. As I understand it, in Spain you have to buy comprehensive private healthcare for your first year until you can get on the government system, and then you...

Re: Proving UK *Residency* when Registering for Residency in Portugal?

Yes, and it just causes unnecessary uncertainty in an already complicated and stressful process!

The rumor originated in a facebook group, from a member in Portugal who recently gained residence. ...

Re: The end of the RNH is near?

Thanks - and good point about the allowance. Interesting that they're specifically targeting pensioners as opposed to those with other forms of income. I assume that's because most of those who...

Proving UK *Residency* when Registering for Residency in Portugal?

I'm assuming this is a bit of internet misinformation, but I have read that in order to get residency in Portugal you need to prove UK residency - not simply UK citizenship.

This seems wrong to...

Re: The end of the RNH is near?

Still nothing about income from non-retirement sources outside Portugal, e.g. from passive income and self-employment. Does that mean these sources are still tax free under the NHR?

Re: how do I become a resident

Ah, didn't realize that. So that means there is no conceivable reason for the EU to reject what they previously agreed upon. I know it's not done until it's done, but it really seems like just a...

Re: Most punitive taxes, Portugal or Spain

At risk of going too far off topic, what were your deciding factors? For me, all those things are fairly equal for both Spain and Portugal.

Re: how do I become a resident

Given that it's been signed by the first EU hurdle, Boris, and the Queen, I can't imagine they'd block it - unless they just won't accept the changes Boris made, such as the child refugees etc.

Re: Exchanging UK driving licence for Portuguese

I just read that UK licenses in Spain must be exchanged by Jan. 31st, so good to know that Portuga isn't imposing such a pointless rule.

@mfesharne what are the "Simplex changes" of which you...

Re: The end of the RNH is near?

So if I'm reading this correctly, if my wife and I are making around 11,000 per year each, we would be taxed at 28.5%? If they get rid of the RNH for non-retired people, that is.

Re: The end of the RNH is near?

That's exactly how we were looking at it - a bonus in the + column, but certainly not the main factor in any decision. We didn't even know about it until joining this forum! We also don't make...

Re: The end of the RNH is near?

Since y wife and I probably wouldn't even be resident until the Autumn, I guess we should expect the unexpected. It would remove one of the + factors in our Spain vs Portugal pros and cons list.

Re: Where to Live Near Lisbon?

Those are excellent points, thanks. As long as there's some art/culture and some city vibe nearby, periodic Lisbon trips of a few days might be enough.

Are there any other areas of the Algarve...

Re: The end of the RNH is near?

Would this only apply to pensioners? What about semi-self employed people living mainly on passive income? I.e., not of retirement age and not on a pension.
