Re: Sending stuff to Japan

I just went down to my local Post Office with cardboard boxes, weighed to ensure they weren't over-weight, well taped up, and sent them off with a green customs sticker on them. No worries. Good...

Re: Sending stuff to Japan

Probably late to answer now, but I sent a load of stuff in cardboard boxes, some sea mail and some air, and it arrived OK. The sea mail boxes took 6 weeks and one had been opened by Japanese customs...

Re: dog in japan?

Whalemeat is foul, honestly! I tried a bit once in the school lunch where I was teaching. It's like eating an eraser.

I think one problem you might have is that the Japanese tend not to exercise...

Re: Returnees to UK: What do you love about being back?

Being in Europe is what I love, and being able to nip over to different countries and cultures so easily.

A list of the headlines gives you a general idea of what's...

Re: UK Property Prices

This sentence would be even more accurate if you replaced the words "industry" and "seller" with the word "government".

Re: What has happened to Britain?

Not by me! Remember the miner's strike, yuppies, two recessions, 3 million unemployed, football hooligans, IRA bombings, waiting a week for a doctor's appointment, clapped-out buses in London... It...

Re: Going back to the UK (child benefit)

You should have no problem getting child benefit - just go down to your local job centre when you arrive and they should sort you out.

Re: Getting my stuff home - from Japan - help...

Hi Okaya,

We moved back from Japan 2 years ago. We had been living there for 8 years. We went to our local hardware superstore in our town and bought about 30 flat-packed cardboard boxes that...

Re: UK Spouse Visa

I was shocked at the cost of getting a visa for my wife when I was in Japan. Especially as the cost of me getting a Japanese spouse visa was a paltry 20 pounds!

Apparently only Australia has...

Re: Warning about taking car back to the U.K.

I looked into the possibility of bringing a car with me (Japan also has right hand drive) but I would have faced a terrible cocktail of paperwork, compulsory modifications (catalytic converter etc.),...

Re: dog and chidrens experience of being back in the uk

Ditto here when I came back from Japan:
"You're coming back? What, to live? But Japan is so nice and clean, what are you thinking of?"

Impressions after a week back

I returned to the UK last week after living 8 years in Japan. It's my first time back in 8 years. After living so long in Japan I "went native" over there so to some extent I am seeing the UK...

Re: Cheaper NI Contributions for UK non-residents

I can't remember where I first heard about paying Class 2 contributions instead of the vastly more expensive Class 3 ones. But I know it wasn't Inland Revenue that told me!

The way NI...

Cheaper NI Contributions for UK non-residents

I noticed in this excellent thread on information for returnees (http://britishexpats.com/forum/showthread.php?t=313047) that at the end there is some dicussion of NI contributions and pension...

Re: Tax implications when returning to UK?

The people who can tell you about this is HMRC Centre for Non-residents (CNR). The web site is http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/cnr - it's worth looking through. In particular this FAQ,...

Re: Japan (how to spend a year/more?)

The JET programme is definitely your best bet. It's much better to come via JET than to arrive and look for work in private English language schools. You will find it nearly impossible to get an IT...

Re: We were not sure where to post so if anyone can help us.....

Sorry I guess we didn't read your post properly. There's a web site where you can check about visas: www.ukvisas.gov.uk. According to that site you don't actually need a visa but if you have been...

Re: We were not sure where to post so if anyone can help us.....

Well I would hope so - otherwise all foreign spouses would be effectively incarcerated in the UK! I guess if you leave the UK on a spouse visa, there's a time limit within which you must return to...

Re: We were not sure where to post so if anyone can help us.....

Re: Budget for returning to the UK

Don't believe the old news reports! Japan isn't expensive any more. Even the Americans here comment at how reasonable prices are. My sister came over from the UK last year and went shopping mad -...
