Re: Solar eclipse 2024

I was actually on my way back to PA from Montreal the day of the eclipse. I managed to see it in Calcium NY which was in the area of totality. I had the glasses to watch it all so it was very cool...

Re: Class 2 NI. What about us poor expats paying voluntary contributions?

I would try and get a Skype number or something like that. I did that when I moved here and it only cost a few cents a minute to call back to the UK. Did multiple calls to HMRC and a few other places...

Re: Getting Married in UK but moving to USA

Just to add on top of this, you mentioned some health issues, depending on if that is something that needs ongoing medication or doctors visits, make sure you'll have enough money to cover the health...

I also did a trip in 2023 to France, where I met my parents (who were traveling from the UK) and then we all went back to the UK together from France. Coming back to the UK I used my US passport to...

Re: Treasury Reporting Rates of Exchange

Thanks for that. Just to confirm my math is correct on this, for getting the UK to USD rate it's 1/0.786 so a 1.272 GBP to USD exchange rate?

As an example, UK account with 10,500 GBP would be...

Re: Class 2 NI. What about us poor expats paying voluntary contributions?

Well it looks like they’re abolishing Class 2 NI again. Just read it on the BBC website.

Re: Annual Leave Entitlements

My company at least would allow you to take unpaid leave but it would need to be approved with a reason so might be doable depending on the company. Mine starts with 20 days PTO per year then goes up...

Re: London to Chicago relocating 1 year

This is why I decided to go with the 5k GBP option, assuming you keep your existing property in the UK and just need flights and a small initial start up fund and that your salary would pay for a...

Re: Advice for a complete novice!

I would also say, get your dad to sponsor you now anyways since you can have more the one application (in the event you do find an employment visa before the family option). It's a long wait but no...

Re: Questions regarding Medicare

I work in insurance for a healthcare company as well and I would tend to agree on the Medigap choice for most assuming affordability isn't an issue. If I were retiring today and taking Medicare I...

Re: UK Pension taxation for US Resident

I have a question off the back of this which will probably apply to a relative of mine next year, when you claim a pension from the UK (lets assume the not getting taxed in the UK part goes...

Re: Moving to the Bay area - need help with public school minefield!

For me the issue of salary is kind of related to the question, because if the salary is say $200k and the house budget is for example $750k and a minimum 3 bedroom house is required then there's no...

Re: Daughter lost green card in England.

Does she need to send in her British passport to get a US passport? I don't recall sending my UK one off when applying for my US passport the first time (maybe I'm wrong) but I thought it just needed...

Re: Let's talk about cars

I doubt it can be that credible, if you take a Tesla Model 3 which is a fairly common EV, it is lighter than an F150 or a Tahoe etc. and there are a lot more of those around where I live than EVs and...

Re: I-864 income question

We both just have regular salaried jobs with companies and no other sources of income. We earn around the $100k mark each. So if my income is $100k and so is hers, in that box do I put our combined...

Re: Voluntary NI payments for pension? (National insurance)

Re: N400 - No movement

Congrats. It'll depend on your local office for same day ceremonies. When I had my interview (in Philadelphia) same day was not an option and I had to go back about 6 weeks later for my ceremony.
