actually I got the notice in the mail yesterday that they will extend it for a year whilst they process my paperwork, so it is all good.

entry to the US under a marriage based visa is definitely a privelige rather than a right. You don't have to go that far back in time to when you weren't allowed in for being Chinese and even less...

I had the two letters just like yours this week, there's a few days gap in between my fingerprinting and interview. The fingerprinting took less than an hour to do, I would advise you to go an hour...
