Re: Your thoughts please - did it happen to you?

This is a genuine dread and one you are right to consider. I lived abroad for 20 years (mostly in the UK actually) and always knew returning "home" would be tough. I resisted it for quite a few...

Re: Over 40's Moving Back and Catching Up

Re: Three years to-day from Oz . . . I feel trapped!

Have had same experience. My mum has lived in Australia most of her life. She has made nearly 40 trips to the uk. Her brother has not visited once.

Re: Over 40's Moving Back and Catching Up

Yes, I'm afraid I thought it was too good a story not to be an urban myth :(

Apple was founded in 1977 at which point Turing's war work was still top secret.

In any case it's a great film. ...

Re: Over 40's Moving Back and Catching Up

Imitation Game is a must-see. I have also seen a documentary called "Codebreaker" which was about Alan Turing's life and was excellent.

In the Apple logo, the bite taken out of the apple is a...

Re: "I'm coming home....I've done my time"

Sage advice. Children will go where they want when they spread their wings but there will always be a pull to "home".

My parents moved to Australia in the late 60s, and now my 3 siblings have...

Re: Three years to-day from Oz . . . I feel trapped!

My mother goes back once a year for most of Aug/Sept months. My 3 adult brothers are over there. People say she gets best of both worlds, and when summer is over everyone goes back to their lives....

Re: Over 40's Moving Back and Catching Up

Well done. You have the whole next chapter of your life ahead of you. You must post updates once you get there. I am sure the time away from the uk will make you appreciate it all the more, and that...

Re: 10 month update

Thanks for all your insights. My youngest is 6 so it's a long wait. I am lucky in that my parents are with me - in fact I would not have moved if they weren't here.

The relationship has been so...

Re: 10 month update

Glad to hear things are looking up for you. I wonder if your eldest will move to join you in time. That would obviously be ideal.

There is nothing I can do to convince my husband sadly. His...

I am sure your family will show you all the cool places. Good stretch of river just north of Windsor has a man made beach.

Re: A tale of two countries: Ireland and Aus

Australia has become very expensive over the last decade, and purchasing power is lower, ie. even if you earn a good salary, most items are relatively more pricey than they would be in UK region. ...

Re: 10 month update

No agreement unfortunately, I spent a lot of time in Australia when I was younger so thought I could like it again. Have now met a few school mums who are in similar situation actually - having...

Thanks BEVS. With children in the mix I know I am here for a while whatever happens - like many others I am getting on and making the best of it, hoping the international heartache will ease over...

Re: 10 month update

Hi I realise some time has passed since last October when you wrote this. The issue of one partner being unsettled in a place is so tough. We were living in UK but my OH hated it so much that...

Re: Australia is too bloody far away....from everything

I think in this day and age of modern travel, people feel like the world is smaller than it really is. We get lulled into a false sense of proximity... "only 24 hours on a plane". Trouble is, that...

aries - how are you getting on? I read your post with interest as my mother has been away from UK since 1967 and dreams of going back. Have you found that there are some English cultural things...

Re: Back one year... reverse culture shock and reconnecting

I can attest to this - moved to Sydney because OH was utterly miserable in London, only to find myself intensely disliking it here, unable to return due to Hague Convention, and of course it has...

That's interesting, how did you manage that?

And what was it like returning to UK after a long stint in Australia - did it take you long to settle in?

Re: Australia is too bloody far away....from everything

Australia is a prohibitive place to travel from, especially with young children and the long haul flights and jet lag. When I lived in London the world was on the doorstep - now I struggle to find...
