The website info prior to applying seems to indicate that once an existing visa expires, the newly applied one takes effect....

I'm a Brit and my wife is from a online ETA eligible country. I was on a 457 visa (with an end date June 2017) when I was in Australia and left for home (UK) in June 2014 after my contract ended.
