I had the MM2H visa and am now on a retirement extension living in Chiang Mai, the latter is much easier to obtain and can be done at most local immigration offices, no requirements like local health...

We were in Northern Thailand end February till mid March and had some hazy days then. We were told by the locals it was pretty bad but to us it seemed less severe than what we experienced in Penang....
