The next scheduled event is Tuesday 27th at the food court. We will be there and happy to meet any other newcomers. Perhaps a few of the old timers will turn up too. If you are the first there grab a table or two by the bar.

When living in Penang I attended and helped organising the Rumah Mat Salleh beach BBQ's. They BBQ's were a great way to meet new people but haven't been organised for a while.
I have been informed a new group of people has blown new life in them and the first one will take place this Saturday 17th October from 17:30 onwards.
The BBQ will take place on the beach in front of the Infinity condominium. It's a potluck so bring your own food and drinks.
In the past a 10RM fee was asked to cover plates, cups, chairs, table, canopy and coal for the BBQ.
More info via: [email protected]
or via facebook account: https://www.facebook.com/rumah.matsalleh?fref=ts
The plan is to make it a more regular event again that takes place every 6/8 weeks.

Did anyone go last night, how was it? I'm afraid jet lag got the better of us.

Hello everyone, my husband and I have been retired in Penang for 11 months. Is there any regular meet up? Thank you.

I don't mind to organize it... How about Chicago at Gurney Plaza either Wednesday or Friday lunch? Or coffee morning... There is a Japanese lunch buffet at Murako inside G hotel every Saturday for MYR69++, all you can eat Sashimi, sushi or tempura... but need reservations...

By the way, I have never been Chicago.. but I don't remember any good restaurant on the plaza... We used to eat at Dragon I, but the food quality is not consistent... If we have group of 6, we can go to Dragon I... anytime, lunch or dinner...except Thursday... maid day...

The first problem with a meetup is you have to allow for the fact that 10+ people could well turn up and if it is good this could easily grow to 20+. In the past they have been at hawker centres, most recently Viva, but sitting this number all together can be problematic.
The second problem is getting people to mix rather than just chat to the people they already know and freezing out the newcomers.
If you can find a solution here then I think it would very popular.

Well, if we don't try we won't know. Dragon I is a big restaurant, the round table can easily accommodate 10 people per table.
I don't think we will have 20 people for the first meeting. As time goes by, I hope the number may grow to 20, I think we will be lucky to have 5 couples or 10 people for the first time.
Eventually, I hope we will have a lunch or dinner club for retirees and try out all good restaurants in Penang...

OK. Wednesday and Thursday are out... We still have Friday or Saturday... Or next Monday or Tuesday... Let's see if we can get at least 6 people to join... If you are interested, we already have 3 people...

Or how about a communal game of pool at the Rasa Sayang Hotel in Batu Ferringhi. The lounge has loads of sofas and might help to get everyone mixing a bit better.
Another place could be Ingoff's German restaurant in Tanjung Bungah. There is a big table there and good choice of beers/wines, coffees and teas.
To be honest I feel quite daunted of the thought of having a meal with people I don't know. If its a bar, then at least you have the choice of having a meal if you fancy it or if not just having a beer, coffee or whatever. You can get out faster if you think many are not your type too, ha ha.
