Re: SoCal Accountant with Visa Experience?

NR , two visas and yes one is eligible under a pretty hefty tax treaty. It's a nice chunk of money that I could be getting or giving back depending on how the laws work and I don't want to be caught...

SoCal Accountant with Visa Experience?

Hey all,

It's that time of year again. I've got semi-complicated taxes this year because I've been on two separate visas and don't think HR Block will give me the best bang for my buck. Anyone got...

Re: Game Artist with a question related to upcoming UK-US move

Bumping an older thread I know but thought I'd chime in. I'm a games dev (art side) based in Southern California if you have any questions about California or the scene here specifically.

As...

Re: Car Rental?

I understand all of this and after doing the hard math I'll most likely try to get a loan from my bank for a fairly nice used car (2-3 years old) for around 15k, if I can grab a decent APR rate. I...

Re: Car Rental?

Considering I aim to find a car within a month, ($760 in rental fees including everything [my best quote]), finding a car, buying a car, registration and taxes, plus selling that car, will overall...

Re: Car Rental?

No, I don't have Amex. I'm reluctant to apply for another credit card since I'm trying to build credit and I'm not sure I'd get issued another one currently.

My current card only covers collision...

Re: Car Rental?

Perhaps. I usually read all the small print/check boxes so I'd be surprised if it slipped by me.

Re: Car Rental?

I had AAA before but cancelled it upon leaving the States (wasn't sure on whether I was coming back). I don't want to take a 70$ hit just to find out their rates aren't too great - what is the quoted...

Car Rental?

Hello BE, it's been a while.

I'm posting again and guess what - IT'S ABOUT CARS!

Re: Driving in California - licenses and buying cars.

Thanks for the tip. I know Kellas Blue Book undervalues the car.. But I'm hoping to get most of my money back on it since I did quite a few big repairs and only drove like 5000 miles on it! :) I'll...

Re: Driving in California - licenses and buying cars.

If you're still looking for a car and you're in SoCal then I'm selling my little Golf right now. Lasted me my 1.5 years on J-1 for a little runaround and did my best to keep it going. Looking for...

Re: UK to US Jet Lag (LHR to LAX)

Same as the others. I moved out here to OC 2 or so weeks ago and had no problem adjusting. Jet lag was the least of my concerns, haha! Although, I was already on an American schedule because of all...

Re: Prove Intent To Return

Great! I'm looking at places to live in Costa Mesa, Irvine and Newport Beach. I'm liking CM most so far cause it's in the middle of everything. I also started my trainee possition and drove on an...

SSN - 10 days?

Hey all,

Quick question that I was suggested to take to a new thread. I've read that I need to wait 10 days before I can apply for an SSN so I'm in the "system", and if I try before I risk waiting...

Re: Freaking Out over Getting a Car

MarylandNed - as far as I understand neither of those apply to me? I am authorised to work as a student trainee on the J-1 and will have a DS-2019 as my equivalent document. Am I correct here?

Re: Freaking Out over Getting a Car

Thanks guys. I understand that. I also understand I can't really apply for my ssn until after 10 days, which I need to apply for the license. I've got the handbook to read on my plane journey over so...

Re: Freaking Out over Getting a Car

I honestly don't think I'm that confident of a cyclist... I am not very good at it and I've heard it can be quite dangerous cycling in Orange County... (unless there are dedicated cycling paths off...

Re: Freaking Out over Getting a Car

Hmm, I will speak to my company tomorrow to see if there is a carpool service I can join, but I feel I'll be pretty limited without a car. The bus is a possibility, but it also will take like 1-2...

Re: Freaking Out over Getting a Car

Thanks all. Alas, I arrive at 7:15pm and I don't fancy driving from LA if I've never driven in the states before. But was a good idea!

The bus will run, but it takes an hour to an hour and a half...

Re: Freaking Out over Getting a Car

Well, looks like I'll have to rent while I figure it out. That car company I linked is giving me a good quote of $1000 for everything (including local fees) until the end of February, as long as I...
