Re: Accommodation in Riyadh and Jeddah

They'll add on approx 8k a year for a furnished property. Then you have to take the 'starter pack' - kitchen gadgets basically - for another few thousand. So it goes up to approx 90k. Payable every...

Re: Accommodation in Riyadh and Jeddah

Yes they are Filipinos but they're mostly domestic staff/workers. I've only encountered two Filipinos in the compound that weren't staff.... its pretty much like that all over saudi.

Re: Accommodation in Riyadh and Jeddah

Sharbatly will definitely be cheaper. We rented a 2 bed 100sqm 'villa' (read one storey tin house) unfurnished for 78500pa. You do get a bit of private walled garden with that. The compound is huge...

Re: Accommodation in Riyadh and Jeddah

Not really, other than laziness I think. Although I know that sometimes they like to add on extras at a whim. Sharbatly certainly did. Do not take the websites for granted - you must if at all...

Re: Accommodation in Riyadh and Jeddah

If you want 2 bed for 110k, Jeddah is the place to go. You'll get nothing decent for that in Riyadh. Arabian homes is nice. Sharbatly is huge, with everything inside you'll need but scruffy and full...

Re: Eid Villas Compound Riyadh

Olaya is about 30 mins on a good run. British school is about 10 mins away on the free compound school bus. Bear in mind both these times can vary wildly depending on time if day.

Re: Offer in Riyadh please suggest

Then you really need to think hard about taking the job. For your wife, a good compound is essential and I don't think you'll get anywhere habitable without having to top up out of your salary.

Re: Offer in Riyadh please suggest

The housing allowance is rubbish, you really need to negotiate that up a bit. Most of the compounds will have a good mix, not just western. My compound has some British, some Egyptian, some Korean...

Re: advice for opening bank account and wiring money

SAAB are the ME arm of hsbc so maybe try them. We bank with Saudi HollandI and have no problems transferring money back to the UK. It costs us 25sar per transaction, plus £25 charge from our English...

Re: Eid Villas Compound Riyadh

Not sure. We're in a 3 bed, (300sqm) and its SAR360k a year..... That does include all utilities, cable TV and furnishings (but not Internet). There's 3 different size two bedders. 100, 140 or...

Re: Eid Villas Compound Riyadh

We moved here at the end of April. Yes, there are a few things that are tired and dated but maintenance and management have been spot on so far. And coming from sharbatly in jeddah, Eid is a...

Re: Beach Resorts in Jeddah/ Obhur?

I've seen plenty of Arab looking people at Silver Sands..... The only other ones I've been to that have overnight accomodation are Reem and Hilton - both absolutely disgusting. I wouldn't let my cats...

Re: Beach Resorts in Jeddah/ Obhur?

Yeah, silver sands have been buggers with their pricing recently. I know they put it up from 100 to 150 sar which took this piss. It's now back down to 100 sar during the week and 150 at weekends. I...

Re: good offer or not?

seriously sort out the accommodation allowance. Even in just a mid range compound, a two bed 'villa' can cost at least 8000 a month. The education allowance is not too bad, but it depends on the age...

Re: good offer or not?

If they're not prepared to at least double your accommodation allowance, don't do it. Unless you don't want to live in a compound, but I would not suggest that if you have a wife and children in tow....

Re: doubts

I've been here 18 months. It's no more dangerous for terror threats than anywhere else. Most of the nutters come from here/are funded from here. Not massively likely to shit on their own doorstep.

Re: cats to saudi

People were suggesting I kill my cats. Not what I would call 'advice'. And my attitude hasn't changed at all. Fight fire with fire etc. Is there some kind of 'selective reading' disease that FMs here...
