Re: Why Retire in Malaysia?

Troub, how about the option of incorporating a Pte Ltd with a local friend and then taking up employment through that company? Isn't that a legit way of getting a visa?

Re: recommendations short break destinations in Malaysia?

Spotted that this thread veered into yachting. You all aware that Tioman is the scene for the inaugural Round Tioman Challenge (http://asianyachting.com/RTFR/2012.htm)? It's just a few short months...

Re: Why Retire in Malaysia?

Attila, not sure where you are now, but just to let you know that I've hooked up with a sailfish angler with a boat in Rompin. Judging by his site, he knows what he's doing. He is a Brit, but that's...

Re: Favourite Malaysian Beach/Resort

Yay, the Northeast monsoon is on its last legs; the rains have eased, the seas are settling and the sun's gaining confidence. Time to breathe new life into this thread.

A sentence with "great...

Re: Why Retire in Malaysia?

I used to fish off WA, Australia, near Dampier, in the north. Great spots for mackerel, trevally, queenie, excellent fun.

I haven't done any serious fishing off Malaysia yet, but I know it's...

Re: Why Retire in Malaysia?

Fly flishing eh? Where do you go? When we drive up to Tanjung Resang, we cross about half a dozen decent sungai, with lots of overhanging branches and what-not. Should be ideal for fly fishing,...

Re: Why Retire in Malaysia?

Makes sense, BB. Same here.

English is my second language, which Ive pretty much mastered and will always fall back on should a Babylonian scenario occur.

To start from scratch and learn...

Re: Why Retire in Malaysia?

I reckon Malay would pay more dividends than Hokkien, even in Penang. Hokkien-versed Chinese may not use Malay day-to-day but they tend to be more fuent in Malay than English, so you'll be able to...

Re: Why Retire in Malaysia?

Life in the tropics just seems so much more laid-back and comfortable than winters in Europe. I doubt that I'll end up in my home country, in Europe.

In fact, deo volente, I can see us, my girl...

Re: Cost of Living in Malaysia Compared to Neighbours

It's sad eh. Then again, I try to remind myself, who are we to hope these countries remain stuck in the days of yore. I'm sure they're as excited as we were when we became industrialised.

I...

Re: Cost of Living in Malaysia Compared to Neighbours

It seems amazing to me that countries that I once liked for their authenticity and traditional old-school kampung style living are now all ramping up to be as industrialized as Singapore, Malaysia...

Re: Why Retire in Malaysia?

Kuantan is rather different from Penang. Usually, if you like living in one, you're not to keen to stay in the other and vice versa. Perhaps you could alternate :)

The Malaysian East Coast is...

Re: Cost of Living in Malaysia Compared to Neighbours

I think Thailand's base was a lot lower to start off with, so even though prices have been rising, in absolute terms, Thailand is still cheaper.

I'm sure tourism has something to do with it. Any...

Re: Cost of Living in Malaysia Compared to Neighbours

Depends on where you are now. If your currency is the Euro, then you'll find that the conversion to RM is quite good, way better than the SGD.

Add to that the higher standard of living in...

Re: What's good to do in Malaysia?

Just to note, you don't really need to go to east Malaysia to jungle trek or snorkel. The East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia offers lots of outdoors activities too. Try Air Papan or Tanjung Resang,...

Re: Why Retire in Malaysia?

Don't know if I'd choose Penang, as it's getting to be pretty busy and noisy. Plus, I'd love to retire near a beach somewhere, for instance the East Coast.

Places like Air Papan, Tanjung Resang or...

Re: Could really do with some help!!

JD, that's pretty decent pay. That is, unless you're married with a few kids in tow, in which case, it's not exactly easy street.

You can get a decent place in a decent district for about 5K. Of...
