Re: You know you are in Australia when...

As I said earlier, I don't know if they still do it but when I moved to London there were quite a lot of City of London pubs that used to close early. It surprised me at the time but seemed to be...

Re: You know you are in Australia when...

Doesn't mean it doesn't happen. I've never been gay but I know that there are gay people in this world.

Re: Melbourne weather in October 2011

It'll be changeable. You'll need layers. Probably not a heavy coat but certainly a sweater and/or fleece.

Some days will be cold, some days will be hot depending on which way the wind is...

Re: You know you are in Australia when...

I have too. Not sure if they still do it but a lot of pubs in the City of London used to close early on weekdays and they'd be closed on the weekend.

Re: Rugby World Cup 2011 Thread

As the Duke of Wellington is supposed to have said. "Being born in a stable, does not make one a horse". Do we remember him as being Irish or English?

Re: Do UK driver license holders need to take an Aus driving test

Generally yes but the difference in price is generally not that large.

Re: I was one of the 1074 caught by the new camera

I love playing playing with someone who will resort to anything to avoid admitting that they made a typo.

Re: I was one of the 1074 caught by the new camera

My take on it is that it's not speed that kills but the unexpected. However the unexpected is more likely to happen the faster one goes (less time to react) and the consequences tend to be greater...

Re: I was one of the 1074 caught by the new camera

Not really. You just wrote it wrong.

I understood what you wrote.
"...not all cops [here] don't [practise it] and all cops in the UK do"

And I understood what you intended to write after you...

Re: I was one of the 1074 caught by the new camera

A "not" would have been more useful.

Nothing pedantic. It was an ambiguous sentence. Plain and simple. And the reader has no control over that.

Re: I was one of the 1074 caught by the new camera

I agree it was badly written and hence introduced an ambiguity which could have been easily removed by adding a helpful negation after the "and" as you have now demonstrated with hindsight....

Re: I was one of the 1074 caught by the new camera

Interesting conclusion. All UK cops practice common sense

Not sure about the itching for an argument thing. I thought it was just a discussion.

Re: I was one of the 1074 caught by the new camera

I agree. I think I mentioned it in another thread but Aus uses default speed limits (similar to France) and you're supposed to assume the speed limit a lot of the time. You also get inconsistent...

Re: I was one of the 1074 caught by the new camera

Okay. The only time I've ever been stopped speeding ever, was in Vic a couple of years ago. I completely missed the sign and the road conditions didn't change. I was 16kph over and the copper let...

Re: I was one of the 1074 caught by the new camera

When I was in the US they were very anal about speeding in both California and Virginia. Obviously there could be state differences like there are here. I get the impression that the other states...

Re: I was one of the 1074 caught by the new camera

Like in the US?

If it's common sense to drive over the limit why not just raise the limit. At what point do you stop raising the limit?

Re: Best beer in Australia

Obviously it depends on what sort of beer you like.

At the moment Boston Mill's Pale Ale is top of my list.

Re: I was one of the 1074 caught by the new camera

It's only 6.2 mph over the limit. Clearly it's just revenue raising.

Re: I was one of the 1074 caught by the new camera

Re: I was one of the 1074 caught by the new camera

I've heard this point a couple of times (although for 130kph) and I wonder if there is any science behind it or if it is a self-sustaining myth. I know the theory is that the faster speed keeps you...

Re: Driving in Australia

In Vic you can do a U-turn at lights unless there is a sign that says you can't.

Nor me. I'm not self-centred either.

Also, although you are not self-righteous, the statement "I will accept full responsibility but I wont be told that 107 in a 100 zone on a...
