Welcome. I've been in Al Ain for 4 months now. I pay 45K a year for a larger-than-average one bedroom flat. The prices have fallen but you'd be very, very lucky to get a 2 bed flat for 40K....

Hi. All I can tell you is that I had a temporary visa waiting for me at the airport whcih my employers arranged. I have the impression that this is normal but I'll leave that to others to confirm.

I definitely needed a residence visa for a pay-as-you-go sim. But I'm in AD, maybe its different in Dubai or at the airport.

I did things in this order:

1. health check for visa
Waited for visa! You need it for everything more or less. I got mine in 2 weeks, including the time for medical etc.
2. Visa arrived...

I've mislaid my purse 3 times at home. Once in a shop, once on the back of a toilet in a pub, once in a cab. Each time I've got it back - with the money as well. Granted there was never that much...

Sorry meant you cant rent an apartment without a visa, not the car. My employers had my passport from the beginning in order to get my visa, so I got my residence visa before I got my UAE driving...

Not sure about everyone else, but my package includes:

- relocation costs (flight, excess baggage plus sea freight allowance)
- healthcare
- accommodation allowance, paid in 6 month installments...

Thanks for the info. When I went in Feb I got the visa no prob from the embassy in london. Should have got a year's visa before i came to the UAE. Still these things usually work out in the end.

Ah OK. And you get the A4 sheet from the embassy after giving them your sponsorship letter and fees? Actually, I'm not sure I trust the organisation of Yemen that much - would rather have it...

No - but I'm still waiting for my sponsor in Socotra to fax my supporting letter anyway. They're sooooo slooooooooooow :)
