Re: Using a Carte Bleu in Spain

It came from my own experiences of travelling in Spain, away from the popular resorts. I have not always been able to use a card. You say it is not always a popular option. In my experience - and ...

Re: UK pensioners would like help with French health rules

But if you take out a yearly foreign holiday insurance policy to cover the car, no one can check how much time you spend in the Uk or in France, can they, if you use the chunnel for instance?

Re: UK pensioners would like help with French health rules

PS - in fact, if you only plan on being here for a year, wouldn't it be simpler just to treat it like a holiday and leave everything in place in the UK, taking out holiday health cover and car...

Re: UK pensioners would like help with French health rules

I'm not absolutely sure but I believe that as pensioners you would qualify for the state healthcare system if you were resident as opposed to taking a long holiday. But anyway you would need to have...

Re: Relocating to Pau, advice needed

I too would urge you to try your children in local French schools. My son had some real difficulties at first (he was tested for dyslexia etc etc but it turned out to be nothing at all like that) and...

Re: Poitou-Charentes should we move?

I think it really depends on how outgoing you are. You may find you have to make the first move sometimes. But with a five-year-old you have a ready-made circle of potential friends waiting outside...

Re: BEST TECHNIQUES / RESOURCES TO LEARN FRENCH

I don't think there is any better way than just to get stuck in!

Can you join a club, group or activity that will put you amongst native speakers? Then you just have to summon up the courage to...

Re: The French postal service

I have found the postal service to be terrific! A registered parcel will be left in the local post office (I live in the boonies - it might be different in a city?) and you will receive a yellow slip...

Re: Schools on strike this Thursday 10th Feb.

Actually, my daughter's lycée is in the Bouches du Rhone (near Aix). It was the canteen and internat staff who were on strike - and yes, no doubt there will be more to come.

But I must defend them...

Re: Lady in her early 50's moving to Brittany seeking advice

I too urge you to rent first! In fact, you might well find it better to wait until next autumn and pick up a cheap winter rental in a holiday home for a few months. Then you can find out if you are...

Re: Hoping to move to france but haven't a clue!!

Ok, let's nail the myth about the Provencal climate!

Because it is so clear, we can get some perishingly cold weather. Minus 15 is not unknown. And factor in the glacial Mistral wind and it can...

Re: House prices

Well, I was hoping to release some equity but not so many people want a big house any more and the smaller properties are disproportionately expensive - and I am not talking nice old stone piles,...

House prices

I wish people would stop saying how cheap property is in France. It depends where you want to live.

After a decade down here we want to stay in the area but could do with a smaller house. Good...

Re: Affordable English speaking schools in France

I think at 12 he could manage the language - even if he 'lost' a year while picking it up, it would be no great deal, as already stated. The advantages (in my view) outweigh the disadvantages. He...

Re: Schools on strike this Thursday 10th Feb.

And for those of us with weekly boarders it means fetching said teenagers home for the night and then taking them back the next day. Humph.

BUT ..... how lucky are we to have an excellent state...

Re: Living costs (again sorry!)

PACA is Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. Obviously the Riviera is the most expensive place to live but where I am in the Vaucluse is still ruinous in terms of house prices. It makes me grimace when people...

Re: Reasonably Priced Homes

It's very hard to work out what a house is 'worth' - it's worth what you will pay for it. In London, for instance, it was easy to measure one Victorian house in a street against another, for example,...
