I too urge you to rent first! In fact, you might well find it better to wait until next autumn and pick up a cheap winter rental in a holiday home for a few months. Then you can find out if you are suited to the life - everyone loves France in the summer, but you need to be able to survive or even enjoy the winters too!

If you have a hobby or passion do join a local club, it is a great way to make local friends/improve your French/while away the winter.
