Hanover

So the FMA has done with them. $18m in settlement, which will be paid by their insurers. Not a bad result for the directors who paid themselves $96m in dividends when the company was insolvent.

Re: Vero

Dealing with them at the mo to do with a claim on our buildings policy and they are a fur-lined, Ocean-going nightmare.

Vero

Anyone unlucky enough to have had to deal with these people?

If so, what are your thoughts?

Re: Genesis

The Hanover thing was my fault - sorry! I was trying to draw a similarity between those who make ill-advised decisions, be they investment or immigration decisions. With Hanover, there was much...

Re: Genesis

I seem to recall I annoyed him with my views on Hanover Finance. He lost quite a lot on Hanover and expected the FMA or similar to bail him out.

But then < erm snippety snip > what would I...

Re: Kiwi Professionalism

When we first moved here in 2008, the Global Financial Collapse was just happening. As an economist, I took a keen interest on arrival in the story of Hanover Finance, who had just collapsed losing...

Re: Kiwi Professionalism

Wow! You're right! Such behaviour NEVER happens in Britain, eh?

I'll just go and start packing..... ;-)

Smile Re: Unfamiliar Expressions

Really?? You might wanna take a look at that apostrophe then!;)

My faves are:

"you might wanna..."
"snarky"
to give someone "the bash"

and "hard-case" doesn't mean the same here as in...

Re: No Electricity

One of our neighbours down the road seems to have had problems opening his garage door during the outage. He's famously not handy - in fact, I wonder how he gets ready for work without hurting...

Re: NZ could 'pull a Cyprus' some day

I confess I haven't read the thread (away on business for a few days, hone, knackered......you know the drill) but Cyprus is a whole different set of parameters to NZ. They took bailout money, then...

Margin Call

I re-watched this movie on DVD recently, and one quote really resonated:

"If you really want to do this with your life, you have to believe you're necessary, and you are. If people want to live...

Re: A word of encouragement and advice...

I'd pretty much agree with everything you said.

All NZ employers recognise the importance of recruiting and retaining good people. One pattern I've noticed is many companies here have really low...

Re: Are you glad you immigrated to Auckland?

In Auckland, there's only 3 types of weather:
1. It's raining
2. It just rained
3. It's starting to rain

(except for this summer, natch ;))

Re: Things you wish you hadn't said

I have a log-jam of these.

"What can possibly go wrong?"

"Microsoft Windows? That'll never catch on!"

"Another baby? Why not?"

"Now you mention it, yes, your bum **does**look big in that"

Re: Job Market

Job Market

It's nuts just now. We're recruiting furiously, but can we find people?

But, recently I've interviewed people just back from UK (all Kiwis) who wanted CEO money.

Is the UK paying huge bucks...

Re: Moving to NZ for 12 months - suggestion on where to live please

I work in IT in the CBD and we live in Kohimarama. Kohi's a lovely spot, close to the beach, not too busy etc. It's about 9kms from the Sky Tower, so dead easy to get to the CBD for work. Kohi's not...

Re: Exporting a car to NZ

Lots of things to consider here. Cars in NZ are not expensive to be honest, especially Japanese cars. European cars used to be expensive here, not so much now though. For example, I have a Volvo...
