Re: Melbournes best kept secrets

Curry houses : Shavan in Patterson Lakes, Marpha in Mentone & best of all, Saffron Cottage in Tecoma. Tried many a dodgy one in the last couple of years, but we keep going back to these ones.

Re: mechanic shipping tools over (how clean)

Not sure how large your tool boxes are, but when we moved out to Melbourne last year our removal firm had wrapped up all my tool chests and floor standing equipment (engine crane, trolley jacks etc)...

Re: Shipping Cars to Oz??

I wouldn't like to advise on the exact car to bring to be honest, it's all down to personal choice & budget if you're intending to keep it and I'm a massive Land Rover fan (for my sins) hence having...

Re: Shipping our Doggies

Seems to have coped fine, we took the option not to visit her during the quarantine and that was probably the best (hardest for the wife) thing we did, as the dog just bounced out of the place when...

Re: Shipping our Doggies

We used www.p-e-t-s.co.uk back in September to ship our Springer to Melbourne, very good service right the way through the process even when we had to change the drop off to have them deliver the dog...

Re: Great offer from Melbourne, but... great enough..?

You'll be fine with that package, anything you can then get will just be bunce for exploring.

Having come over here last October following my wife's job (albeit on slightly more than that) we've...

Re: Hindsight - The questions you wish you had asked...

*chuckle*

I don't no, had to leave them to come here as I've moved to the one state of Oz where they have no operations, the only project they had here is / was coming to an end. Had been with...

Re: Hindsight - The questions you wish you had asked...

It's often not considered. I'm not sure who he works for, but certainly with the firm I used to work for in the UK (Laing O'Rourke), moving to a job with them in Oz meant leaving the UK company and...

Re: Areas to live in and schooling - Melbourne

Melways is the Oz equivalent of an A-Z map book, only much heavier. Very handy to have though as most places will give an address and a Melways page / square reference.

And yes, agents here are a...

Re: Shipping Cars to Oz??

Yep. Thought I had it fixed yesterday so went to collect Michele from work in it. Ended up driving past your place to avoid traffic on the way back and keep it moving, it just wouldn't run if sat in...

Re: Shipping Cars to Oz??

If it'll fit, then put it in your house container otherwise it'll cost a fortune to ship. The way I saw it with our classic car was that if it goes in the house contents container then its shipping...

Re: UK Company Employee Working in Australia

I used the short term business visa a couple of years ago whilst seconded to the Australian operations of the UK firm I worked for, did nearly 3 months then went home for a week and came back for...

Re: Shipping Cars to Oz??

Personally, I'd say no. Sell it in the UK and buy something here as small european cars aren't really that expensive (albeit they're more than you'd pay in the UK given the current exchange rate)....

Re: Health insurance for 457 visa (British citizen)

To the OP, look at BUPA. They have a section for insurance for Oz as they're out here as well, we took it out in the UK when the 457 was going through last year. Gave a few options of what to cover...

Re: Shipping Cars to Oz??

Yeah, I left the UK in October so the car's been in storage since then being serviced & prepared, finally got delivered to the docks and went on a boat at the end of January. Due in Singapore later...

Re: Shipping Cars to Oz??

I've read & seen it happen both ways, so don't doubt what you're saying. As we've owned the car for 2 years, I have a form to sign about the air conditioning system and haven't had to de-gas it. The...

Re: Robey1978

Good call on the LinkedIn profile. I did that last year, it's been very useful, certainly seems to be used for recruitment here in Oz far more than it does in the UK.

Re: Taking dogs from UK to Australia

This pretty much mirrors how much it's just cost to get our Springer over here to Melbourne, ours ended up at £3300 or thereabouts. You've not included for the vet fees for the tests and...
