But there's a couple of golds at Athens that I think I'd rather leave untested - think of the potential heartache..... Some things best to leave alone sometimes. I think the 8 year retention policy is a big reason that records haven't been falling this time.

Dail Mail says that Saudi runner received a standing ovation despite finishing a lap behind everyone else.
Well if she didn't have to wear all that body covering fabric , she might have done better.

The Mail also says she was born and raised in the US, has dual citizenship and trains at Pepperdine Uni. Ok so then she isn't really a 'Saudi Olympian', but the authorities just overlooked it so as not to piss off the Saudis. Just shows that the Olympics committee was just paying lip service in taking a stand against Saudi's gender discrimination.

Seeing as how she was born and raised in the US and trains at Pepperdine, I strongly suspect she doesn't wear such restrictive garb when running at home/pepperdine.

Hopefully after the Olympics has finished, the media will try to focus on the more positive side of Britain and the people from GB rather than peddling the negative doom and gloom which they usually do to sell papers.

2m 45 ?? Why the hell was she there?? I used to run the 800m in 2m 10 as a Junior. Surely there was someone better qualified to run it?

They are world champions at the top of their and my sport. Yet they don't have flash cars, massive houses etc..they train like bastards day in day out.

I think she did a remarkable job. Who cares about the time - she has shamed the Saudi's and inspired a lot of woman in her home country. Let's hope they are driving soon and reforming that place.

She totally deserved her standing ovation. Pity she can't run for shit though, but hey, she looked nice.

Conspiracy Theory Number 479:

Saudi official: "I don't like the idea of our women running in the Olympics....... wait! I've got an idea! Let's select a really useless one, then next time we can use her performance as evidence that our women aren't ready to compete yet........ no need to send any of them next time.......!!!"

It was interesting to see both the Men's and Women's GB football teams. What a contrast.

The Women's team played well and did themselves proud. They played their games fairly and in particular didn't overcook their reaction when fouled.

The Men's GB football team? - not impressed either by their performance or their attitude.

Taking the response to a 'physical challenge' - the form seems to be to roll over on the ground at least for 3 rotations in 'agony' followed by/accompanied with putting both hands up to the face (until they get a free kick). Compare this to the physical challenge of at least on tackle in a game of Rugby League.

I have a friend who is a physio. She pointed out that, if the challenge was a bad as made out, they wouldn't be able to roll on the ground but would be still and screaming in agony. Shameful and pathetic.

Agreed, they should take a leaf out of other real men's games and just continue play until the stretcher is required.

Any injury that demands a full stoppage of play should be serious enough for the player to be taken off the field of play for a medical checkup and not return for 5-10 minutes. Taken off on a stretcher means they cannot return for the duration of the game. Worst form is seeing a player stretchered off and then jump off the stretcher at the sideline.

Got nothing yesterday....today we got...

Spoiler:

2 golds in boxing, gold and bronze in horse dancing and the welsh bird in the final in the Taewkondo, the bloke is in the bronze play off after coming back from 6-1 to go 6-5 but finally lost it 9-6.

And that's before the athletics and sailing.

Not the most fashionable Olympic sport perhaps, but the best basketball game I've ever seen at any Olympics has seen the USA drawing on all of their considerable skills to come from behind to beat a brilliant Australian team.

Superb skills on show, including the amazing Lauren Jackson of Australia............. yes, that's right - women's basketball.

As I've rather viciously slagged off Irish priests (hardly a difficult target) in another thread, let me balance the scale by drawing attention to the one who is behind (stop it) the astonishing world-record smashing David Rudisha:

I've heard Brother O'Connell (ok, so not, strictly speaking, a priest) interviewed on RTE radio also and he really comes across as a genuinely humble and decent man. There are a few.

Japan have to be a little gutted in the footie finals, they've had two blatant handballs and a player blatantly pulled down when having two arms wrapped around the forward and none of them were given.

Cracking game of footie, superb shots and saves, but that ref needs to bugger off.

The IAAF has confirmed that the sex test row athlete Caster Semenya can compete in the 800m event after her father Fatima Whitbread confirmed that she is a girl.

It's an activity though, not a sport....they might as well add darts and snooker.

No doubt they would if they were more universally played.

Well snooker is universally played, well maybe not much in the US, but it's not like the UK have been dominating entirely in the game in recent years with players all over the world.

Darts, wouldn't have a clue, but you always see a dart board in various pubs around here, so who knows...

Not much world success at the elite level snooker or darts (did I just say that for darts?), darts has messed itself up with the division in organizations, and has successfully spread out to the dutch, but hardly a world sport outside the pub players beyond the usual national culprits.

If you don't have to be fit to play it then it's a game. That means that snooker, darts and golf are all games, not sports. BMX is a kid's activity.

If you didn't use a caddy, golf would be a bit more active than the walking event :D

And the fitness thing, well you don't have to be fit for a lot of the fighting events, skilled, sure, but not fit, as they're so short, but I'd still call them sports.

Archery, pistol/skeet/trap shooting though, they're definitely in the activity arena :D
