.......... and dramatic inaction at the fencing............ Korean woman beaten by German - refuses to move while her officials appeal (she's been sitting there motionless for about an hour now).
It's 'live' on OSN Sports 3 if you want to watch her doing nothing........ |

that pic isn't even from the Olympics (unless the timber fence is one of Danny Boyle's creations that's been left in situ) |

Can't believe they had to send the official off to an ATM before lodging the appeal either... And she didn't even win the bronze after all that. |

So the Chinese female gold medal swimmer beat the American male gold medal swimmer in the final 50m stretch. .....
I have to join the people who suspect doping. China has a history of cheating, from doping to falsifying age. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...l-swimmer.html |

Anyway, I think she just farted during the last 50m - too many green beans. |

Day 4 almost over. 4 medals, 0 golds. If we maintain this performance we will be the worse performing host nation on record. brilliant.
Go Team GB - I know a world record isn't in you, but a Guiness Book of Records Entry might be. :fingerscrossed: |
Re: The Olympic Games Thread
Phelps becoming the greatest Olympian ever today was bloody brilliant. Great athlete and a really decent bloke it seems.
Ye has been tested this games and 4 times this year and results negative. Innocent until proven guilty - brilliant 2 final performances. Bradley Wiggins is currently equal with Sir Steve Redgrave as the most medalled British Olympian ever with 6 medals. Tomorrow he has the chance to go one better. Fingers crossed for a medal, hoping for Gold. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_B..._by_individual |

He's the greatest ever swimmer, I'd say....... ........... but Greatest Olympian must be Jesse Owens, for all he had to overcome, including in his own country. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...sse-Owens.html |

Impossible. You might look down the consistent medal winners over 5 games and end up with a Trap Shooter. Nobody would claim them to be a greater Olympian than Redgrave / Phelps / Whoever. It's not comparing apples with apples so you'll never end up with one. I think you can get a list together of some of the greats but it depends entirely on the credit distribution for; - No. of gold Medals - No. of games attended - Total medal haul - World records beaten - Obstacles faced, racism, sexism, dodgy officiating etc. None of those can really be cross-compared. I think it's tough. It's like comparing Messi with Pele. The sport is the same in that case but the era's very different (thats another for the list). Don't know mate. Don't know who I'd pick. I'd be tempted with Redgrave because I think he holds the values of the Olympics and was clearly a true champion of champions. Difficult because that's my era. I don't know about ROmanian 14 year olds getting perfect balance beam scores. Also I don't know enough about the Uzbekh Weightlifting team who have won millions of golds (that's just a made up exmaple)....to be able to commit to one person. |
Re: The Olympic Games Thread
It's Daley Thompson. Anyone with with a ZX Spectrum game named after him is clearly the winner.
Man, I had some screen time playing this: (That said, I played Jet Set Willy a lot lot more) |

On another note, the Saudi Judo contestant will be allowed to wear a Niqab, special dispensation was made . It's like that footie match that ended 3-3 which was the only result that would have got them both through to the tournament. Think they were Scandinavian weren't they? The Dean will know. |
Re: The Olympic Games Thread
Was impressed with the men's weightlifting last night. Martin of Romania just pipped at the post to silver by the final lift of Triyatno which to me and many others looked very dodgy--but not a murmur of dissent. True sportsmanship.

And closer to home: I cannot recall the year but England and Northern Ireland played out a 'hard-fought' (not) 0-0 at Wembley so both qualified for the finals (1982 or 1986 WC qualifier?). No sense of fair play there - barely a shot on target all night........ Small pools/groups always run this risk - one unexpected defeat means you finish second not first, and the likely opponents in the next round try to lose to avoid you......... by losing to the GB women last night, the Brazilian ladies will now play someone who must have thought they would avoid them (I'll check who that is, if anyone's remotely interested). |

That was what prompted FIFA to scrap the second-round group-stage which favoured 'not losing' over winning.

Re: The Olympic Games Thread
Could I just pop in (again) to recommend london2012.com as the best website ever? Apart from being very easy to navigate around, it isn't updated with scores 'regularly' - it is updated live.
Just had the beach volleyball on the telly while following the score on the website - updates are instantaneous, including each shot (serve, attack, dig, etc). Superb. [Ladies about to start - at 10pm London time - with another game after that] Also: London Eye looking stunning by night. And I'm enjoying the commentators' references to London landmarks ("..... at the Downing Street end....") |
Re: The Olympic Games Thread
Wiggins. ****ing awesome. Great ride, dominate that time trial and the crowd looked absolutely immense. Great stuff. Froome as well, he'll be a champion soon enough.
Glover and Stanning - Missed the rowing because I was at Sega Republic. Gutted. Replays I've watched looked really exciting and again, the crowd were mental. Don't forget Jamieson's silver in the pool. Only just lost out, another 5 metres and he'd have got gold. |
