Superb skills on show, including the amazing Lauren Jackson of Australia............. yes, that's right - women's basketball.

considerable skills to come from behind to beat a brilliant Australian team.

We havent heard those two words in the same sentance for a while!:D

And the fitness thing, well you don't have to be fit for a lot of the fighting events, skilled, sure, but not fit, as they're so short, but I'd still call them sports.

What fighting event don't you need to be fit for?

Judo and fencing for a start, hardly high endurance events needed, just skill. Probably add Taewkondo considering how short the bouts are, but they're a tad more flapping about than the others.

I'm definitely in that 55%

Me too, but it did not cost me anything. All the reward, none of the pain.

disagree totally. There are many types of fitness and fitness does not mean endurance, in which case Usain Bolt is unfit as i bet you i could run a 10K faster than him.

Judo guys in general are very very fit. Not so sure of fencers but they must have pretty good reactions and be sharp...again requiring a form of fitness.

And to say that Taewkondo does not require fitness is just absurd. Pull yourself away from your PC and put in a sustained effort for a couple of minute of jumping on the spot and throw in some high kicks..and report back...

Yes, but when the UK introduces US-style global income tax for all nationals (which is eventually inevitable) you'll pay your share...........

In any case, I can't imagine taxes will be raised to pay for the Olympics - the UK will just go into more debt.

You have been out of the UK too long. Taxes were raised - but only for Londoners through a council tax surcharge. It is why we had a vote on it.

Edit - really? For this year only, or in perpetuity?

Actually, I can't remember. I suspect it'll be perpetuity - it'll be like the Dartford toll - once people get used to paying it there is no point taking it away.

A gov website states:
Olympic precept - A precept on all properties liable for council tax within the Greater
London Authority area to contribute towards the 2012 Olympic Games. The precept was
introduced in 2006-07 and has been set at £20 per Band D equivalent property for each
year

Must be forever, as it's still being paid.

Don't need to be fit to fence? You've never done the sport then. It may surprise you to know that I fenced (foil) for a number of years and it's more physical and skillful than you may think.

Indeed. Never 'fenced' but in Glasgow we used to smash eachother with snooker cue's. It was hard work.

And yet all that is skill and a couple of minutes of raised heart beat, sprinting aside. That's not fitness as a requirement. That's not to say that those involved in those sports aren't fit, but you don't really need to be fit to compete in them.

Fit to be good at it at this level, definitely, but you don't need to be fit to participate, and that's what really differentiated something being a sport and an activity.

That could be said about most sports though Bob. You don't need to be particularly fit to run a marathon.....in 7hours.

Absolutely thrilled for young Tom. A bronze is great and I don't get the naysayers who think that's bad. The wide grin on his face was wonderful.

I read that he was given an exemption from fasting and will start his Ramadan fast after the races.

He seems like such a nice guy and am delighted that he got both golds. He's absolutely British as far as I am concerned too.

EDIT> BBC Sports Personality of the Year should be interesting this year...

I would just like to point out how silly it was of the hyperbolic British commentators on the OBS service (used by both Jazeera and OSN) to claim that Mo Farah had cured cancer when, in fact, everybody (who has partaken of any Irish media in the last three days) knows that Katie Taylor did it first...

May have overdosed on Olympics and be suffering a slight hype-backlash..

No idea. Ask Mo. I still don't see the relevance though.
