I cannot believe the holier-than-thou attitude of some of you lot.

At the risk of being proved stupidly wrong, I am absolutely convinced this is a desperate roll of the dice by the Portuguese police whose incompetence so far has been boundless. The outcome is that they are in effect framing Mrs McCann.

They have admitted that, in that particular police district, they have zero experience of missing child cases. That would not have been a problem of itself but a string of 'suspects' have been taken in for questioning, released on bail, rearrested, released etc etc........ clearly a scattergun approach, but let's ignore that and look at the latest developments.

We are asked to believe that, 25 days after their daughter's disappearance, by which time hundreds of TV and journos were watching and filming their every move, they openly went out and hired a car in their own name, and used it to transport Madeleine (or her body) from A to B.

Her DNA has now been 'discovered' in the car. Her DNA would probably be identical to her mother's anyway but no matter......... this is a chance to 'wrap things up' and get all those journalists out of our sleepy little village.........

If the child's DNA really has been found in a car hired 25 days after her disappearance, that is solid evidence for a full-on murder charge, with maybe a deal being struck later to persuade the parent(s) to admit to a 'reduced' charge of manslaughter. A deal to get her to admit to 'accidentally' killing her daughter, in exchange for a 2-year sentence? Garbage. They have NO evidence and just want to wrap things up. Either they are bluffing and hope the McCanns will fall for it, or it is an attempt to persuade cynics like me that they really really really have been taking this very very seriously indeed...!!!

And now allowing the parents to return home now? Er.... no....

Later, if anyone's interested, I'll post some stuff about how the Portuguese police handled so-called English football 'hooligans' at the Euro 2004 football championships...... some good stuff there..........

They are incompetent lying scum and their latest ruse may well ruin the lives of an innocent woman and her husband.

The ultimate and tragic irony of the latest developments? That it gives the bastards an excuse not to continue investigating the whereabouts of an innocent little girl.......

Thank you.. none of us accused the accused.. it was a discussion, we will all have our own views.. none of us know these people or their reasons for what they are doing.. the press is all we have to go by ...

surprisingly good point, bb.

You're right. I actually hope that she fell down a rabbit hole, has had a lovely time and that the queen of hearts is bringing her home from wonderland right now with a plateful of jamtarts - or at least that she's alive & well somewhere.

Let me re-phrase. The police better be bloody sure that the parents did it.

the police will always blame the parents first, we had first hand experiance of it in germany, guilty untill proved innocent

Will we ever know?

This is what scares me the most...I subscribed this forum just to get the opportunity to leave my thoughts and opinion about this case.
I'm portuguese (please read it until the end!...) and this story has haunted me since the first day...
On the following weeks after Maddie's disappearance, whenever I arrived home from work, I asked my mother about the latest news on the case. Once the journalists even said that she could be travelling on a white van near the region where I live. On my way to work I looked around everywhere, hoping to see a white van...This was mass hysteria working...
Now they say it was her mother and we get upset and ask ourselves how she could have done that...

The main facts I know are these:
1. The kids were left alone for an undetermined period of time by their parents;
2. The police was called a long time after the parents noticed her disappearance;
3. Forensics collected many evidences from the house (but it had already been rented to someone else!!! And this I find very strange, because for what mattered, that was a crime scene...); and also collected evidences from a rental car. Dogs trained in Britain smelled corpse odours in some of Kate's clothes and Maddie's favourite toy.
4. All the forensic evidences were sent to a British lab and then sent back again to Portugal (one month or so after!!!).

You may not know the story, but a few years ago, we had a case of a missing girl in Portugal called Joana. Her desperate mother opened all daily news services crying that her little girl had been kidnapped. It was painful to see her grieving for her missing child. She distributed papers all over the place. Then, a week or two after, the police found out that the mother and Joana's uncle had killed the little girl.
The portuguese people was shocked because we were tricked by this woman with her false tears and appeals..

I'm not judging Maddie's parents in advance and I don't believe in everything what the press says. In fact, I think that most of the things are just rubbish to sell newspapers.

I've heard so many British people defending them so fiercely that I can't stop thinking about some portuguese that said the same thing about Joana's mother...

I would prefer that Maddie returned home safe to her parents and all this nightmare ended. I would prefer that this nightmare never started if only her parents never left her alone, not even for a second...because ultimately, they are guilty of doing so.

Re: The mother did it.....

Do you remember the dingo baby case in Oz? They made that story into a movie but never really established the cause despite the mother spending time in jail. When the Maddy story initially broke, I immediately concluded that the parents did it...raising twins can be stressful enough. Now I am not so sure. If they had killed her, whether accidentally or not, surely the body would have been discovered before now. After all, the parents are not that familiar with the locality. I recall meeting a British couple in Tangiers once who have revisited their hotel every year for over a decade in the hope of finding their daughter who was snatched in a bazaar...maybe Maddy will end up being sold here to a rich Arab family and is being looked after.

just want to say that although my gut feeling says the mom has done it, BY ACCIDENT, this is not based on any facts cause I don't know anything about the case...
The whole discussion about could you do it or not was more a general one, and this subject I find quite interesting.

You are the only person to have presented a rational basis for a point of view which is interesting and informative. Equally so other points of view based on opinion are valid but I like yours.
