And as for education, I suggest you take a look at any table showing the best Universities either in Europe or the world and see how many of them are in the UK-only the US outnumbers the UK.

President Bush went to the number 1 ranked one Harvard
London Major Boris Johnson went to top UK ranked Oxford

Linus Torvalds went to Helsinki University (ranked 104th )
Linus Torvalds invested the operating system Linux at the age of 19

HAVE I EVER LIVED OUTSIDE THE UK???

Well yes I was born in Spain, Swedish and Spanish parents and I have lived in,

Madrid, 1972-1979
Stockholm, 1980-1989
Vienna, 1990-1993 College
Boston, 1993-1998 University
Paris 1998-2001 Work and now London Working.

So you I guess you can say I lived in a few places...

And it is as I said, so amusing to see how great Brits think they are.

They have the best schools systems in the world, yet Americans and Brits are the worst in the world when it comes to languages.

We all now how school funding is based on the rankings that are manipulated.

I do not know of any other European city where 3 teenagers a week gets murdered by other teenagers.

Obesity in UK is only beaten by US

Hospitals where Rats and MRSA is rife.

Binge drinking is the teenage "sport" of choice

Sorry to break the news matey, but "Great" Britain has changed a lot and it was a loong time since anyone called it "Great" Britain.

It is these days just a place where us foreigners go to earn some quick IT contracting money and then get out of (funnily enough they had to use a foreign contractor as myself, I would imagine they could have filled my job with some British homegrown genious)

but I can imagine Britain looks better since you moved out of it..

Well, as I have always said to others, if you don't like it, leave it. That is why I am leaving the country I am in.

Difficult to understand your position and your attitude, as you now live in London, in a very generous country in comparison to other countries. You must like something about GB!

You can also claim child benefit for your son when he joins you in England:
http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/childbenefit/arrivals-to-uk.htm

It's not much:
http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/childbenefit/rates.htm

but every little counts, don't you think?

PS I assume you are a British/EU citizen...

It went surprisingly well, thank you for asking.
There were a few kinks with the video, in that at first I could see him but could not hear him, and he could not see me but could hear me.

So we disconnected a few times and he was very patient with the whole thing. We ended up viewing each other on video with no sound, so I called his mobile and it turned into a one hour conversation. I hope it was well worth it.

He will let me know in a few days. Near Wimbledon. I think the tough part now is finding a room for under 400 a month. Those prices are a shocker for me! I rent a 3 bedroom house in Thailand for 140 quid pcm. Culture and price shock awaits me!

Would you plan to live near work? I think you are right that it will be a challenge to find such a place at under 400 pcm. Let us know how it pans out!

Tell me about it! I pay about the same in Indonesia as you do in Thailand. I'm going back to a rather less price area of the UK, but rentals are massively expensive there. Have you seen this website?

Don't know anything about London to be honest, but maybe an area nearby would be cheaper?

I may be completely wrong here but Whereamifrom, this person said they were born here in the U.K. and left when they were 4yrs or whatever. Doesnt this class you as a British National / Citizen? I think you are you know! If this is so you qualify and quite rightly so for any benefits this country has too offer. If people wish to leave this shores then return and not apply for benefits etc then that is ludicrous in my opinion. If it is there to help you till you get on your feet or sorted then apply for it you are a citizen!! best of luck by the way.

You are right in that I am from there. I could post the long email from one of the staff from a homeless prevention office at the local council. Basically, I am intentionally homeless, as I am leaving a home willlingly.

No jobseeker allowance as I have made no contributions.

The only good thing is, thanks to info from previous posters, NHS. I am diabetic and I can bring some medicine into UK, but I now know I can get it there as well, mostly free.

But yep, I will land with about 1000 pounds in pocket. 800 of that will be 1 month rent and deposit. The other will be rail money to go to work with and maybe a heavy rain coat of sorts.

Talk about being on a diet!!!!

I love your attitude, "You are not even British!!!"
(That was not really a problem for the company that offered me my current job and flew me over to the UK, but then again, they couldnt find anyone with my skills at the time)

...oh best part of it, I made them agree to make my salary taxfree, since I am not British Citizen and it is a 3 year contract...

No why should I be British? It is only a problem to have a British passport, as you still need working permit in Scandinavia and Switzerland with a UK pasport, with a Spanish passport it is plain sailing.

What are you doing in Italy then, I suppose that you are fluent in Italian?

I am on here because I am looking around for where to go next...and no other country has a website for expats (maybe they are happy where they are)
