Hi Fish
I don't post so often because I have nothing much to contribute. I won't be unsubscribing though as I want to see you all, eventually, return. Not forgetting ED, I'd really love to see her happy ending.
The reason I answered Barb's post was because there are so many nice places surrounding the North's industrialised towns, although I accept they are usually a bit pricey.
This is a few miles away from Middlesbrough (& I know what you mean about raspberry ripple).

I lived in Sheffield before coming to the USA, a very industrialised City, it was dirty when I left and today its wonderful and clean, and yes expensive but most places are.
I Love the North, Heck I Love most of the UK, I just wanna be there.

[QUOTE=trottytrue;8969760]Beedubya..I really feel sorry for you I know exactly how you feel and that is my biggest worry. I love my children very much and I will miss them and deep down inside it really scares me but we go back to the same issue. How often do we see them. Is it worth giving our lives up for a few hours a month. There is such alot of technology today thats makes it much easier to keep in touch. We have the video camera on the computer. What difference does it make if I am in the Uk talking to my family or up in the wilds of NH. Perhaps as tmes goes on things will get easier for you and you will come to terms with the fact that you are going to have to wait a little while before you can go back to the UK. Plus soon your Grandchildren will be older and off on a new road and your daughter will then be able to save up to come and visit you in the UK and if all goes well with her new beau she will have a n

Wow I saw that on TV the other week, Nothing beats the sound of a good church organ, Id love to shop at that Macy's, Good music always makes me feel so good and that organ is a Beauty, Thanks Trotty.
There are some other good organs on You Tube if you care to search.
Does anyone remember the days when Organs were played at Cinema's or before a live show at the seaside?

Wow, I took a couple of days off because I had a huge workload and it's taken me hours to catch up! You people are prolific
To be fair, one side did their best to provide that but the other side deliberately blocked the effort. What we got will be better than what we had, but it could have been even better if Americans weren't so obsessed with the free market. This is what I have come to understand about America - I will never understand the people. Not as long as I live. Brits have their issues, Lord knows, but I understand those just because that's my home. Americans are an utter mystery to me. We finally got a little security about healthcare (albeit not until 2014) and now people want to repeal it. WTH???? I was reading yesterday about a small town in Arizona where the local government has introduced a curbside recycling program - voluntary, not mandatory - and the population is protesting the 'socialist government intrusion. Good grief!
Fish n Chips, I agree with you about Tony Blair and so do most of my friends back in the UK, so he does have his supporters even now.
Beedubya, I agree with you about the Lake District! (but you already know that) This week's 'The Trip' is set in Cartmel and I can't wait to watch it!!
DDL and JJ, great to hear from you!
Rodney - just 3 weeks!! I am green with envy.
Oh and page and pages ago, you guys were discussing radio shows - I recommend Radcliffe and Maconie on Radio 2. They're two Mancunians who love music and are just funny (but not in that annoying peppy Radio 1 way). I listen on iPlayer.
I will say this I am very saddened by politicians on both sides of the ocean. They never do what we the people ask them to do. They do what they think is best for us. In the UK they where supposed to have a referendum on being in the EU but they never got it. Here in the US you would think all these great minds could come together and think of a way to get healthcare for all those who are citizens of the US. So I have decided to turn off all channels that deal with politics on both sides and listen to my radiio and watch my DVD's. In other words bury my head in the sand. I'll come out when my house sells

Sally this is EXTRAORDINARY! I just logged on to ask this question:
Can we in the USA use BBC's iPlayer online to access BBC programs?
(I'm asking for someone else, never heard of it myself).
You have answered my question--seems as if you can indeed do so, yes?
My question is about not only radio programmes but also accessing TV programmes through iPlayer here in USA. The questioner had heard that in some parts of the world you can get the radio, but for the TV it says "access denied."
Maybe this has already been covered in our forum but I wasn't apying attention at the time!
Tina.

Sadly, you can only use iPlayer for the radio. They block it for TV

Check with the recent prior posts on this. I think they said there is a company that blocks the BBC from knowing where you are located and therefore you can get TV.

Re: OVER 50's & 60's MOVING BACK TO THE UK.
America is proud of the free market system, right? Now look at this court case between Costco and Omega. It seems they like the free market system when it is convenient.
Read this from Clark Howards notes for today.
I see that I have included, which I wanted to do, the current airport screening practice.
Supreme Court hearing Costco vs. Omega price-fixing case
The Supreme Court is now hearing arguments in a case involving Costco Wholesale's discounting of name-brand watches that could have far-reaching implications for discounting at retailers of all kinds. A decision in the case will likely be issued next summer.
Here's the back-story: About three years ago, the Supremes made a 5-4 decision that effectively allowed price-fixing by manufacturers. This decision infuriated Clark at the time. He believes it showed a lack of understanding of capitalism and a contempt for the free market.
America historically has left pricing up to retailers. But in a nod to big business, the Supremes opened the door to manufacturers three years ago to control what price you should pay for their goods at the store.
Now, the chickens have come home to roost in the Costco case. Costco is appealing a decision that let Omega Watches prevent the warehouse club from selling its watches for $1,299 instead of $2,000.
Amazon, eBay and Google are all on Costco's side. In addition, all the major retailer trade organizations have thrown their support behind the warehouse club.
On Omega's side, you have a litany of players. The publishing industry, the film industry, the music business, the pharmaceutical companies, the oil companies, computer manufacturers, printer companies and even the Obama administration have come out against Costco.
The businesses in this unholy alliance claim they're worried that what Costco is doing could ultimately cheapen the image of any brand that's discounted in the future.
The most disgusting thing of all to Clark? Nobody has been representing the consumer in the arguments before the Supremes. Something is really wrong here.

TSA's new full body X-ray scanners upset the flying public
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) continues deploying new X-ray full body scanners to airports around the country despite failing to communicate the importance of what the equipment does to the American people.
The TSA has been defiant and hostile to the flying public and to the media about the new devices and procedures in airports. If you're not familiar with the situation, these full body scanners are being deployed at a rate of around two each week week around the country. By the end of 2011, these devices should become the principle form of screening in our airports.
The x-ray screening device is essentially Superman, with the ability to look right through your clothes to your naked body beneath. When it's your turn to be scanned, you have to thrust your arms up in the air and clasp them above your head. The operator sits in a booth that's supposed to be out of sight of the security checkpoint.
If you refuse the X-ray screening, you're now subject to a new very aggressive pat down where you are groped, for lack of a better term.
There are already debates about the radiation level emitted by these devices, with one pilot leading a protest because of how frequently pilots and other airline staffers have to pass through these things.
In Clark's mind, the TSA has failed 100 percent at communicating the importance of the X-ray scanners to Homeland Security and its mission of protecting us from al-Qaeda. TSA leader John Pistole should be removed from his post, according to the consumer champ.
If you don't do security in a way that people understand and support, you are actually harming the nation. The X-ray machine has created anger, hostility and distrust between TSA workers and the flying public.
This really speaks to the abject failure of our nation's airport security to distinguish who's a threat and who's not. We need to assess that on an individual basis, not treat everyone like an al-Qaeda operative.
On a more positive note, Google is paying for free wifi for travelers on Delta, AirTran and Virgin America flights from Nov. 20 through January 2, 2011. Now that's a real deal!

We are in the far south of Italy near Lecce, in the Salento (the heel of Italy). Thanks for the welcome!
