His scripts are funny and heartwarming and I know people would like them - but it seems stuff has to be grim to get on TV now.

I like Last Tango in Halifax because it actually shows the North as it really is, not as some dour, grey, hopeless wasteland.

And I too love Gogglebox. What a fun show! My favourites are the Siddiqi family (spelling?), Scarlett and the gay guy who sits on the left. Oh and the posh drunks!
I liked that very much too. In fact, I am enjoying the fact that all round there seem to be more programmes situated in and about the North. I am quite over London and the South, it seems

For those that "enjoyed" The Missing and are comfortable with subtitled stuff.

I recently watched an episode of a TV series, The Silence. I expect you know it. But while researching it, I came across a German movie with the same title from 2010 - German title Das letzte Schweigen

Brilliant.

Oh yes...it's on netflix

I really enjoyed Downton's Christmas special this year.

Downton was enjoyable. Doctor Who not so much. I think I am over it. Looking forward to watching Last Tango tonight.

I saw this, but I'm not sure if it was the movie or the TV series (think it was the movie). the trailer looks familiar but there were some scenes I didn't recognise so am not sure.

Anyway, for those who like their dramas dark and mysterious, it was a good watch.

Perth what are you using to get BBC over there and is it free? Dad needs something since expat shields not free any more.

The TV series had Douglas Henshall and a deaf girl.

The movie (like the missing) showed past and present (23 years apart) child disappearances. A couple of creepy looking Germans early on and then not so creepy. Not appearance/behaviour-wise anyway.

A firefox add-on called MediaHint works for BBC iPlayer (and ITV, C4)

Free.

Also try FILMON in it's various forms (several different links). Select channels...may take a minute to settle.

Ah, OK, it was definitely the movie that I saw. I misunderstood what you had said - thought they were two versions of the same story.

I just watched two clips from the TV series and am surprised I somehow missed it (as I was in the UK in 2012 when it was last shown). I also like watching Douglas Henshall (Shetland was great), so will have to look for it on LoveFilm, as it's no longer available on BBC iPlayer.

Thanks for the heads-up!

I think it was through catching up on Shetland that I discovered the silence series. I was reminded of DH and went looking to see what else might be available.

Thanks for the info Bristol, I didn't think MediaHint worked anymore either (at least Dad says he can't get it to work but I wonder) but I'll & get him sorted with FILMON next time he comes to visit.

I've seen conflicting info. Some said there's a charge. The website refers to a free trial.

Maybe an older version is free. Mine still works and it's the same version as here.

I've been using Hola for 3 years now with no problems. It's free and you can watch shows from any country. It's an add-on in Google Chrome or download from Hola - Free VPN - Secure Browsing - Unrestricted Access in any browser.
