When I was watching it, I had to keep reminding myself that it was based on a true story. Otherwise, I would have found it too far fetched. So the truth can be stranger than fiction.

He certainly had the skin crawl factor didn't he? Let's just hope they keep the genuine article locked away for a very LONG time!

I watched all 6 episodes of Outnumbered in a one-er this evening (recorded) and it was priceless British comedy - hilarious and touching at the same time and infused with the British ability to laugh at our own weird, quirky abnormalities.

Needs subtitles.

But yes, it's great. Ann Cleeves only wrote a handful of novels and I think they have covered about 5 so far - I am wondering if it will end after this series or if they will keep the characters and write some "made for TV" stories. I hope so.

Dunroving, I thought you would have been well versed on the Scottish lingo by now.

One of my students is from Lerwick and even she can't understand the daft accent some of the actors are using!

I remember, years ago, watching a show called The Story of English (very good by the way) and in certain areas of Britain, including London, they used sub-titles.

Back to Shetland. Some of us Lowlanders were surprised to hear that Lerwick is pronounced Lerick (as in Berwick-upon-Tweed). We have always pronounced it as it is written and so does at least one presenter on BBC Scotland. Has your student commented on this?

I noticed that too ... I don't remember anyone pronouncing it like that all the time when I lived in Scotland

When we watch the show, we have a little sweepstake going as to what time in the show they will say that 'Lerrick'

I tried but Bill Nighy drives me insane to watch on screen so I had to turn it off.
