I might give it another try. I used to love the original, but over the years I lost interest as the production seemed to rely more heavily on visual and sounds effects to tell the story.

I prefer to think of it as stuff on UK TV. That would include good quality foreign stuff.

A couple of nights ago we watched "gogglebox" on uTube on our tv (had this feature on it for 2 years and did not know we could ) and it was absolutely hilarious! Never laughed so much, we could not stop watching them! Hubby said would it not be ever so funny if we have them watching themselves on tv and their comments then? Thanks Sally for putting us on that one!

On Canadian TV all the swearing and cursing is usually blocked out so it was a refreshing change to have programs uncensored

Now we are going through the list on Netflix that Dunrovin gave us, thanks for that as well!

Same here. I watched Scott and Bailey a few months ago on our local PBS. Every swear word was blocked (and it appeared there were a lot of them)!

Off-topic, but Sally Wainwright was interviewed on R4 a while back. I didn't realise she wrote Scott and Bailey as well as Last Tango and Unforgiven.

She's very talented. I loved Scott and Bailey and Last Tango - I haven't seen Unforgiven. Must google it - perhaps I could get it on Netflix.

It is an excellent drama, lots of rich characters and sub-plots and it makes you question your own attitudes.

Be careful of reading posts about it on this thread as there are one or two potential spoilers in previous posts.

Just a quick note to recommend a show currently on iPlayer called 'The 7:39." It's a two-part story about two people who meet on a train. Very well-written and beautifully acted, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Thanks. I haven't seen it yet but thought it would be worth watching.

7:39 was excellent. (Couldn't quite figure out why she would have been attracted to him, though)

As I said I haven't watched it yet...but I seem to remember a similar TV mini series staring Burton and Taylor it was shown on the 70's I think.

Edit: here it is...I thought is stared Taylor too but I was wrong. I wonder if 7.39 is a remake? http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0071247/...nm_flmg_act_15

Interesting you found that - it was a remake of a 1945 B&W movie which itself was a dramatisation of a Noel Coward play.

The 7:39 isn't a remake, but does centre on a man and woman who meet on the morning train and things go from there ... but different in many ways from Brief Encounter (I'm not giving away any clues, all of this has been described in the many publicity materials about "The 7:39"

What I loved about "The 7.39" is that everyone was so human. It was what Last Tango in Halifax could have been if it hadn't got so 'soapy.' I just felt for everyone of the characters - even the annoying one.

I loved it too. Sheridan Smith is a fantastic young actress as well as Olivia Colman from Broadchurch.

Plus I must be the only person that fancies the pants of David Morrissey

I'm quoting an old post but, having just watched Bron/Broen series 1 and Forbrydelsen, I just have to say THANKS to you and Dunroving for bringing these shows to my attention. I became thoroughly addicted to them, even though I couldn't work while listening as I had to read the subtitles, and am now a HUGE fan.

I like the edgey, gritty realism and the superb acting. The storyline of both kept me on the edge of my seat and are responsible for me getting to bed waaayyyy too late (or early) on several occasions.

Apparently I'm not the only one:
http://www.thedailybeast.com/article...c-noir-tv.html

Now into Bron series 2 then I'll go looking for Borgen series 1.
