Indeed, but the kind of diet I have, given that I can't shop at the
market _every_ day requires food refrigeration. I think it's a
worthwhile sacrifice. I also have a very energy efficient fridge.

Almost all vegetables and fruits can be consumed raw,
indeed most are more nutritious that way.

Maglev continues to be mostly a laboratory curiosity. Besides, TGVs can
handily exceed 270 mph, although they don't do so in regular service.

The car only has to operate an hour or so a day to exceed the power
consumption of the air conditioner.

Sorry, but introducing irrelevant factors isn't going to work. The fact
is, power consumption for air conditioning is much lower than power
consumption for motor vehicles. If you are really worried about the
environment, concentrate on getting rid of the motor vehicles.

They can build nuclear plants, too. Eventually, they'll have to.

At any given instant. But even with a car driven occasionally and an
air conditioner used continuously, the car still uses more power. Motor
vehicles represent the bulk of per capita power consumption in developed
countries.

Really? What are the other issues?

In extremely hot climates, without A/C, you must sleep for most of the
day, as it is simply too hot to do anything else.

I don't know. Why do all employers seem to require everyone to start at
8 or 9 AM, and finish at 5 or 6 PM?
A vast amount of energy could be saved by staggering working hours, but
nobody wants to do that.
