Probably Likavitos. We had lunch there once, but the view was poor
because of the smog.

They've started work on The World's Tallest Building, and the World's

The World's Largest Condo park right behind Jumeira Beach resort is half
finished.
Crazy guys, these sheikhs. To deal with the traffic, they will now start
building The World's Longest Subway.

4 weeks I'm off to visit the wife's daughter in Portland.
First of July I'm off to the Holy Land. Mayo, Connemara, and Galway,
for a 7 day self guided walking trip. Inn to Inn kinda thang where
they move your luggage for you each day and you walk about 10 -
12 miles each day. After that it's on to NYC via a 2 day stop in
Dublin. Probably 3 shows and 6 dinners for sure (NYC that is).
Bunch-o-lunch stops as well.

This reminds me of a story an American friend told me when she first

Stuttgart. She said that the students could then all speak with one
another, there was no problem, but couldn't speak to the Stuttgarters
because of their Schwabian dialect. Unfortunately, hochdeutsch has a
very limited geographical distribution.

I will say, that even despite the lower amount of traffic(which I haven't
directly noticed), that RTE is consistently better, brighter, faster, and
more reliable than many other newsgroups. The politics I could live
without, but a healthy dose of killfile entries have minimized this.
I am getting ready to book a trip very soon. I'd like to go to Europe, but
with the crappy dollar, and the fact that I only have about 7 days this trip
makes me think otherwise. I don't want to ride on a plane for 8 hours, both
coming and going, and only have five real days of vacationing. We love
London, and I've tossed the idea around about jumping over the pond for a
week. We've been to London a few times, and have seen all the major
attractions, so this would be mostly just hanging out. Perhaps if First
Class were cheaper..... :)
We have been doing the necessary research on Curacao, whose Guilder(or
Florin) is fixed at $1=1.77 ---and so the rate stays the same compared to
the US. The foreign exchange rate history for the last year is scary. It's
just about the only thing I've seen which is stable, of course, because it's
fixed.
Curacao is an island in the South Caribbean, just north of Venezuela in
South America. (yeah yeah, its OT) It's about 2.5 hours by plane South of
Miami, Florida. We were looking for something a little off the normal
cruiselines / package tours, and this is better than Aruba, Bahamas, St.
Maarten, etc.
Both Amsterdam (perhaps this is why we are going to Curacao?) and Eastern
Europe (we're thinking Poland) is slated for the Fall, money/time
permitting.
Anyone have any close (5-6 hour flight time from East Coast US) destinations
outside the US that aren't overrun with tourists in June, that preferably
aren't on the Euro?
Thanks.

This past October we spent the month in London, Paris, Barcelona, Zagreb,
Osijek, Dublin and Portrush (in that order). Pictures, but no narrative, at
http://travel.kemsleydesign.com/Europe2004.
In June, headed for a week each in Provence (Ile sur la Sorgue as our base),
Florence and Venice.

Though I suppose travel is more on-topic than, say, a comparison of British
and Americans in their preferences of bacon, much of my travel is off-topic
in that it's not in Europe.
I was recently in Dubai for three weeks (two business, one pleasure), though
I did stop in London for a day along the way, finally making my way up to
Camden to see the markets and the locks. I also had a nice walk in Hyde Park
and visited Parliament for an hour or so.
This past weekend was spent in Southern California, midway between San Diego
and Los Angeles. Much time was spent at Laguna Beach and by my hotel's pool
soaking up some sun, though I did have a chance to see a the Mission in San
Juan Capistrano, sample some excellent Mexican cuisine nearby and see some
stand-up comedy.
I just booked two trips - one to Saint John's (Newfoundland, Canada) in July
where I'll both be attending a friend's wedding and finally seeing a part of
my own country further than a day's car ride away. The other is a three-week
stay in Mexico this coming September where I'll likely concentrate on the
state of Oaxaca.
Much faster approaching is another trip to Dubai during the second half of
May. This one is for two weeks only is entirely business but I'm considering
a side-trip to Hatta during the weekend in the middle of my work. I would
like to take a longer stop in the UK this time, should I transit through
Heathrow as I did on my last trip. I'll likely research a few daytrips from
London since in my last few stays there I never ventured beyond zones 1 and
2 on the tube.
Finally, getting back on topic for this newsgroup, in November and December
I've a 5-week business trip to Toulouse, with the possibility of staying on
an extra week of my own time once the work is done.

I had a British collegue in London many years ago. One evening, after a
couple of beers, he started to talk to me in Bavarian Swabian with a
very strong British accent. We discussed a while like that when another
collegue from Hamburg showed up.
"What are you guys talking?" she asked. "Do you actually understand him?
He once told me he spoke some German but I could understand no word and
thought he was just joking."
It turned out that he had lived in Augsburg for a while, working in
English, and all the "German" he knew he had picked up in inns and bars.
Far away from Hochdeutsch or anything somebody from Hamburg would
usually understand.

For European destinations, probably only Iceland qualifies. Even if
it's not on the Euro, it would be exceedingly expensive, but it
certainly wouldn't be overrun by tourists, especially in early June..
How about Ecuador, they use American dollars.

My wife & I finally figured out that it was easier to move here. We had to
pack a lot more stuff but only once :)
Now, we just step out the front door and we are travelling, even if it's
only to the supermarket.
The only problem left is deciding where we will go for our holidays :)
