So who is travelling?
There is always some noise in this group, and I suppose I do my share
in contributing to it. It does, however, appear to me that we have been having relatively little discussion of travel recently. It looks to me as if fewer people than usual are discussing their plans or hopes for making trips, or telling us about what they have been doing. Come on, folks, tell us what trips you are thinking of doing or have done, and invite discussion. I'm off to Brittany in two weeks' time. Not much to say about it, I'm afraid: it's familiar territory for me; I'll be spending most of my time meeting friends; I'll be taking home a carful of wine. The savings on the wine will cover to cost of the ferry so, in that sense, it's a free trip. -- PB The return address has been MUNGED |

We're off to Bergen for a long weekend at the end of the month. Again, familiar territory, and it's more of a family visit to my brother. Next holiday being planned is 2 weeks at the beginning of July- Krakow, Budapest, Bratislava, Vienna. (Itinerary is flying Manchester to Krakow, then to Budapest, train to other destinations, flying back to Manchester from Bratislava.) I think that's fairly tight, but based on the way we usually travel, fine for us. Also, I feel we've minimised the travel time. I've already solicited a bit of advice about this, and have read other connected reports and posts with interest. Later on in the summer, another visit to the North of Scotland- but as with last year, this is all taken care of by the people we visit. (I won't mention the business travel, though sometimes I do here, when I have specific questions, or think there will be some rest time.) Later in the year, trip to Peru is planned, but well, that's off topic here! -- David Horne- www.davidhorne.net usenet (at) davidhorne (dot) co (dot) uk |

I'm off to Swindon soon :-( And maybe Sorrento/Naples later in the year. So lots of questions about that one nearer the time. But, Paddy, where would you most like to go that you haven't yet been ? |

I have, for almost three years, planned an extended trip to Germany to take an intensive course in German with the Goethe Institut. I just got tentative approval from work for Leave without Pay to make the trip, and I expect by the end of June to know definitively if I am really going. Currently the plan is to leave September 29 or 30th and return December 6th. The tentative plan is four weeks learning in Dresden, four weeks in Bonn, and a week or so of travelling at the end with my husband. I hope to get a rail pass (German Rail) that will cover 10 trips, and to travel throughout the German-speaking world. Most of my accomodation will be in dorms run by the Goethe Institut. I'll also do hostels on weekends. The class is 4 hours a day, weekdays, and I hope to explore a new place every weekend. -- Julie ********** I could be wrong. It's hard to find German speaking people in Dresden. The usual conversation language there is Saxon that has not too much in common with German. Ah well, the plan is German (and my guess is the teachers will be speaking German. Certainly the students will. -- Julie ********** I could be wrong. My experience is limited to my experience. And you certainly will enjoy the beautiful surroundings of Dresden and the positive atmosphere of the city. I also hope to be back there soon, not only to visit my bunch of relatives. Re: So who is travelling?
I will be going to Greece for the 1st time in about 4 weeks, from
Monday to Friday and staying only in Athens. Sadly it will not be a holiday trip, but I hope to have enough spare hours to see something. Any must beyond the obvious Acropolis? Also, I'm leaving this Sunday to UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrein and Saudi Arabia, but this is out of the scope of this ng. J. |

As I've been poor for the last two years due to a career change, my expeditions have been confined to the UK, mostly wonderful Wales. Just bought a new all-singing, all dancing computer so I'm still poor! As a part time Further Education lecturer, I get nice long breaks, so the current compromise is that I'll be undertaking work in those breaks as a tour-manager. I have a tour confirmed in the summer - a wine-tasting trip to the Mosel Valley in Germany, and Rhine cruises at Christmas and New Year. There may well be more tours in the summer as well, in which case the proceeds of these may fund some trips of my own. I fancy going to Romania, but it depends on funds! I remember a really nice evening meal in a restaurant high on one of the hills overlooking Athens last time I was there - Sorry I can't remember the name, or which hill - maybe someone else knows it. |

A trip to Bruxelles in June to hear José van Dam in three performances of "Die Frau ohne Schatten", plus (hopefully) a free concert on the Grand Place with him and Deborah Voigt in excerpts from Wagner and Richard Strauss. It may not be the most glamorous city in Europe, but I like it, and look forward to seeing it again. (Most of my European trips have been in pursuit of performances by van Dam, since he doesn't sing opera in the U.S. very often, anymore - and never on the West Coast.) |

I'd love to tell some European travel stories, but we've been confined to California, Arizona, and northern Mexico for the past couple of years.. and I wouldn't want to wander off-topic. :-) That said, our AMEX points are piling up and if the right deal was offered, both of us would like to spend a full week in London. Our last visit was only about three days total on both ends of a Germany-Sweden trip - just enough to realize how much more we want to see. Gordon |
