Default A New Marcos Era?

Having read a few articles about what the foreign press think about Marcos becoming the next president. How do we feel how it will effect our life style here if he becomes president?

The opinion polls were fairly accurate about the 2016 result and the margin is large in his favour this time but best to wait a few days to see the result before answering. But will be difficult as he has refused to publicly debate with the other candidates.

Only our life style? A touch restrictive. The site rules here do allow a wider discussion.

The BBC seems to have found out how it works out here.

I saw on TV that the voting places in Cebu were only allowing a couple of voters in at a time due to "Glitches" ( Meaning everyone has already voted yesterday ) with the voting machines. It will be the usual 2 to 3 weeks before the final results are available, in the UK manual counting and final results within 12 hours

Yes, but we can already call it with confidence for Marcos and even more so for Duterte-Carpio.

On your original question mostly more of the same for us Expats, except that Marcos calls himself a nationalist and may feel badly about some of the comments from abroad that are bound to come on the return of the Marcoses to power.. So maybe some reaction on that when it comes to our treatment.

What about domestic unrest? Some, but I expect it to die down. Martial law a long time ago and memories are short and they always just want to move on here. Even something recent. Was there any debate about covid and the harsh lockdown? Very little.

What will he do to the economy? As someone said there's not much information around to base a forecast on. He will be in the strange position of publishing his plans after winning! Continuing and maybe expanding Duterte's, to my mind rather dubious, Chinese financed projects seems likely from his limited statements .I will be interested to see his team of advisers. He will need them as his understanding of economics and frankly anything a bit complicated seems to be poor..

We as Expats find living here beneficial compared to our countries of birth for a number of reasons. However, for me, and maybe many of you, if we see certain things going on here outside of those purely selfish areas they reduce the pleasure we get in living here. For me getting closer to China is one negative one, then if you read the Wiki summary of his positions he is against capital punishment, for divorce and has some more liberal views on abortion. So maybe some plusses on social issues.

But a big negative for me, he and also his VP in waiting will do all they can to stop moves against their fathers. Whether legal or financial.

To me it seems that a majority here seem to think that electing a strongman/strongwoman team is what the country needs. They don't care too much about the policies and don't know much about how things are going now with all the disinformation around. Unless he is a complete disaster I think he will continue in power for at least 12 years, unless challenged by Duterte-Carpio next time.

So you think he will enact martial law as his father did and just stay in power.

No need. I think that after all those votes he's got opposition to him will be limited to the few groups still campaigning against the Marcoses about the 1970s and tax. People are very respectful of the Presidency here as shown by the high ratings given to Benigno Aquino and also then to a very different incoming President in 2016. Think it will be a Duterte Lite regime with plenty of projects and government initiatives, more disciplinary regulations. People might find him too bland for a strongman, but he's got Sara.
