I dont much care about australians i have found them in general to be racist and have an air of superior arrogance which i find extremly hard to like .
As you know i have been here a long time and have been in lots of social positions where the drink is flowing and it is then the true colours have been shown .Anyway you dont want to here me prattle on its only my experience and yours has obviously been different and that would certainly help in you settling in .

Then can you explain to me why i have found the average australian to be parochial [especially west aussies] and can at times be quiet insulting towards your country of birth and believe me it is not only me that has exparienced this ,indeed somalis ,nigerians ,vietnamese feel on the outside in this country .

i find it amazing that two migrants can have such vastly different experiences .I can honestly say it doesnt matter what social engagement it is,or work environment it is that once i get to know them and get to the nitty gritty of things that by and large my opinion of australians doesnt change .

i should have read the warning signs when i was minding my own business 20 years ago in a pub in midland having a quiet pint ,when some obnoxious clown started annoying me and once he noticed the accent it was on big style .Id only been here a fortnight and have never forgotten it ,i put it down to bad luck at the time .

i worked on the doors here in the nightclubs and pubs here in perth for many years and lost count how many times i got a 20dollar note chucked at me at the end of the night by some old drunk with a cheery ''here is 20 bucks f--k off back to where you come from ''.It doesnt take long before the resentment builds up and the potential relishment of giving one of these t-ss-rs a good kicking was pure joy.

If those are your experiences then I can't argue with them. I can honestly say hand on heart I haven't been insulted by anyone in my time here. My husband works for Woodside and all his work colleagues are very nice. My kids friends parents are all really nice. I can't offer any explanation about why my experiences are different.

KK I agree with you, they are incredibly parochial and rather arrogant and self serving. I have been here a long time too! Of course you are going to get individuals who break the mould but usually they are migrants or their parents are migrants and they grew up in the era of wogs and slopes. I have worked with some absolute shockers who definitely dont walk the talk that they espouse and some really nasty bullies. I dont stand out in the crowd and unless I tell them, they often dont know I am a Pom - that came from the early days when Pommie jokes were just part of the "good natured banter" and it seemed easier to blend like a chameleon so what little accent I did have quickly got dropped.
I have a very wide circle of acquaintance but a very small circle of friends!
