To e that makes more sense and allows more people to win and still have more than enouth to live on and look after family?

Are we happy we came back....yes, now that we are finally settled, we have got our lives together and are really enjoying it. I'm glad I went back to Canada, because I would always have wondered "what if" and I would always recommend it to young people to give it a go, it's a great country. We have been lucky to rent a 3 bedroom semi for £550 pm that is really great as the rents at the moment are going skywards due to the fact that people cannot buy the demand for rental is unbelievable, what it will go up to when our years lease is up is anybodys business:eek:bur for now we are sitting back and enjoying things. We have a pay as you go electric system and so far it is working out approx £10 per week (there is just the 2 of us so it will be more expensive for families) we try to shop once a week for essentials and then top up with fresh produce, but I think it works out approx £80 per week. We are with sky so our internet, basic tv channels, and phone (I took out the 24 hour free uk and international calls for £5 per month extra) works out at £43 pm, so I feel we are doing ok. Things are getting a little more expensive grocery wise, but I still enjoy shopping here for both food and clothes and I don't really feel ripped off. The one area I do is fuel, I find petrol/gas/oil companies a total rip off, but then again in Canada I also areas I thought were rip off, so it swings in roundabouts. All I know is this is were I am happiest and glad to be back amongst kith and kin and i realise that it what we are all about, without friends and family we maybe financially well off, but emotionally poor, and that is what we were, deprived and starved of companionship and friendliness, I would never want to be there again. Good luck and God bless Denise:wub:

Great to hear from you, Denise, and thanks for the update.

So good to hear you are settling in and enjoying it.

In my opinion at least, this post is more than just "chit-chat" and should go on the main 50s & 60s moving back thread, because it's an important insight into the process of moving back and settling in.

Hope all continues to go well!

I do believe I am way more English than I believed I was even though I have picked up the Aussie twang along the way........

I enjoyed the Video, I played it a few times, its quite catchy.

Most of that video was taken inside Caesars Palace, many casinos get old and are replaced but Caesars seems to get better, its still a very nice Casino.

I bet that was Liberaces piano, he played Caesars alot, In fact I saw him there in 85, soon after he died, he was certainly a world class entertainer.

Hello Denise.

Thanks for the update, I'm really glad you are doing well and are Happy with your decesion to move back.
All the best for the future... Fish

Ohhhh if only we could all win the Lottery, it would solve our money problems, I too agree that I would have a home in both the UK and USA, maybe two condo's in America, one in Wyoming and one in Oregon...

I'm one that also would love to see lottery amounts capped at a reasonable figure, it would be nice to see it spread around, Id sooner see more millionare winners than one that wins more money than one could spend in a lifetime, the money would circulate better, creating more jobs.

Is it true that that the UK doesn't tax its lottery winners?.

I knew he owned alot but this list is really something, Ive never cared for him knowing that he had so much power and control in the UK and USA, he was never elected in either country, He hides behind many covers not only our beloved fox news lol, the Dow Jones and Wall Street journal amazed me, thats alot of influence in the way American money thinks.

I'm still wondering why people continue to buy the sun, isnt it really the daily version of the news of the world, Maybe he will start publishing a Sunday Sun with the same garbage...

I first remember Murdock when the Murial Mckay story hit the TV screens in the 60s, it was a kidnapping case of mistaken identity, does anyone else remember that story?.

Hi Fish I dont remember that Murial McKay story, ------ but when Murdoch closed the News of the World he did say that he plans to make the Sun into a 7 day week paper, and a lot of experts said that it would replace the N.O.T.W. for the Sunday version,
What do you think of how this Murdoch story is moving along so fast, everyday, something different, yesterday the main boss of the Police force --- the Commissioner of police resigned and today the (assistant) commissioner of the police resigned too, Rebecca Brooks was arrested and questioned for 9 hours until midnight a couple of days ago, tomorrow is the big day for Murdoch and his Son AND Rebecca and others to face the MP,S in parliament, a whole day of questioning there, the day after that PARLIMENT IS CLOSING for the summer holidays, there all going on vacation for goodness knows how long, Hmmmm Many arrests in the last week, so many heads are going to ROLL, Some people are saying that even Cameron is not safe ---- mainly because of his close relationship with Rebecca Brooks and the Murdochs in general, Hmmmmm I wonder who will be arrested tomorrow,
Fish is this also such a big story over there in U.S.? is fox news thrashing it to death ---- on second thoughts I guess they wouldn't would they as Murdoch owns Fox too doesn't he,
Here I think this is the biggest story since Christine Keeler and her friend Mandy rice Davis almost brought down the British Government in the 1960,s

In the early 80s I worked in a store in Las Vegas, back then it was still a smallish town..and about twice a monthe Liberace would come in and shop , and although he was always flamboyant..he was also very friendly and polite..no need for body guards in those days..as I said it was still a small town..I also served Sugar Ray Leonard, and Jerry Lewis in there...good old days..;)

Not surprisingly, Fox News is pretending this isn't happening other than someone occasionally doing a heavily spun story and chastising the rest of the media for jumping on the attack. I mainly watch MSNBC and it's had a lot of coverage on there though.

Not as much as it would normally get because the country is on the brink of a financial collapse thanks to some in congress refusing to raise the debt limit. Looks like we might all be in debtor's prison this time next year!

Rod the story is getting better and better, I just hope justice is truly served, he has had far too much power for too many years in the UK and here, he acts like he is sorry but thats a story I'm not buying, some of his people are so nasty, they have no morals, if they are criminals they should go to jail, they need to learn a lesson, they are adults they know right from wrong.

I really hate that he came here and created a so called news channel that seems more like a brainwashing for its followers, America wasnt like this when I came here, today its very polarised and full of political hate, we are the losers.

He had enormous diamond rings on almost every finger. Three years ago we went to the Liberace Museum in Las Vegas. It was not in a very good area but it was fun to see all those pianos etc., Ihear it has since closed down which didnt surprise me at all as we were the only visitors.

Ah that's a shame about the museum closing down but I don't suppose anybody under say 50 would even know who he was. :(

Well except for the guy on the video I posted of course LOL!!

Not as much as it would normally get because the country is on the brink of a financial collapse thanks to some in congress refusing to raise the debt limit. Looks like we might all be in debtor's prison this time next year!

WOW Sally I had no Idea it was that bad over there in U.S. you just never here too much of Americas economy over here so Ive been out of touch for a while, but of course I could see the writing on the wall before I left:eek:
It certainly looks like I got out of Dodge just in time!!!!! :)

It's quite scary. They have until August 2nd to lift the debt ceiling limit, or else the US will go into default on its debts. Just like Greece and Ireland - only this is totally unnecessary. If it actually were to happen, the whole world economy would suffer. Let's just hope some of the tea party people see sense before everything goes up in flames.

Hi Denise - yes I remember seeing the grand piano ring.
I look at PropertyPal often to check out the real estate. Rentals have really gone up but I think it is a wise first move. House prices are still dropping. I still hope to live in South Belfast somewhere. I am happy to hear you are enjoying being back.

The rental market is stupid at the moment, there is such a demand they can ask monopoly money for it. I am enjoying it here, and have joined Shandon Golf Club on the Knock road (do you know it) hoping to meet new friends there. The only downside is the weather, we have not had a lot of sun just grey skies all the time and it becomes a little depressing, the south of England and even southern Ireland get better weather, and it is cold, I like the seasons, and don't mind rain, and snow when the season demands, but I do like a couple of months of nice weather in the summer to carry us through the winters, definately the climate is changing, and not for the better. 6 months here and 6 months somewhere warm would be lovely if it was affordable, unfortunately for us its not:(

I know those of us going through 24 straight days over 100F think you are crazy! Seriously, Belfast has been described as a grey city with grey people.....most likely due lack of sunhine. Having done (just like Barb) the zigzagging several times.....when I was much more financially stable.....I almost like the fact I will have to stay and learn to love it. I am stubborn, spoilt and now for the first time in my life I will have to be responsible for me. A doctor's wife and then a lawyer's wife and now there will only be me and no one's wife. I think at 67 it will force me to grow up......still pretty scary....

Also Denise.....of course I know Shandon Golf Club. Lovely area. I took golf lessons here in Dallas at Northwood Country Club where we were members. The coach fired my best friend and me after two lessons. Can you just imagine how pathetic we were after a $60,000 initiation fee????

I was 'home' in Lisburn last year and took a trip into Belfast. It was cold and wet but the warmth of the people made up for it. There is still nothing like an ulster fry. OH played golf at Balmoral and loved it.

I know Balmoral well, have friends members, and you are right about the people, just want 2 months a year with a "little" sun, seems a long year as we couldnt get a break to europe for some sun, but :fingerscrossed: we will be able to next summer, and then I won't be whinging:rofl:

I'm sorry dear friends but I've just found out that someone has been logging on to BE to check my comments. As you can imagine I feel very upset so for now I will just be reading until I can take time to change my details. I suppose this is just a sign of the times - and a sign we need to be cautious about our privacy. Thank you once again for all your kind words. I will be in touch.:(
