Yes, she is in series 3 but she won't be signing on for season 4. Also Dan Stevens (Matthew Crawley) still hadn't signed on for season 4 last I heard. But Maggie IS in season 3 - it's all been filmed already.

Here's a clip with her and Shirley McLaine:

Rodney go somewhere and order yourself a drink in a cocoanut with a little umbrella in, I bet that would make you feel better.
My Ds has only had a couple of rain free days since he got to UK. Dh said sell his bed quick so he can't come back, it's trial by water instead of fire. Good job he's an excellent swimmer. :D

Very funny Dr Jones ;)

Hi cheers,
Yes I remember well the very few times during the year that it ever rained in Vegas, me along with many locals there would dash out in the rain and just enjoy the pure Joy of feeling the rain on your face, it was always such a novelty,
Now back home all summer so far its hard to find a day without rain, the exact opposite to Las Vegas,
Im glad you enjoyed your 4 days in Vegas, when you go visit do you stay with family there? or a hotel? I seem to remember you telling us that you had a Son and family that live there.

'Me' daughter lives on the south end of town in Henderson with her hus. and children. If you remember where the Henderson Airport is then you have a general idea. She lives high on a hill and in an area that is way away from anything yet it is still all built up around her. She has to drive 3 miles to the nearest shopping centre if she needs any groceries.
Last night I talked to said daughter, at 5pm I think, on the cell phone because she should have been home by that time but she was still in the Los Angeles area where she had been for a family reunion. After they left their hotel they went and spent the day at Santa Monica pier. After that they left (5 pm) for a 4 hour trip home but they stopped at a Honda dealership (for 4 hours) and ended up buying a new Honda Pilot because it was a colour she wanted. The last time I talked to her it was about 9 p.m. and she was only then about to leave for the 3 plus hour trip back to Henderson. Needless to say I didn't sleep too well thinking about how tired they must have been and driving on the freeways. It is now 7 a.m. their time and I think it is too early to call them.
My son is moving to live in Boulder City next week-end after living in your area of Las Vegas for 2 years. He lived in an apartment out on Russell Boulevard which is the area you lived in if I remember. We took he and his wife out to the Cheesecake Factory restaurant in Green Valley in Henderson for a special birthday dinner Friday. Boy does he like to spend his parents money. Two of everything!
Long post, huh?
Cheers

Thanks cheers, yes indeed I remember Henderson very well, my friend used to live there for about 15 years before he moved with his wife to Seattle Wa,
Where I used to live in Vegas was the area called the lakes, Durango & D.I.
Real close to the Rampart Casino, but a little bit to the right there 5 minute drive was the Suncoast Casino, one of my favorites, and the buffet there was Fab!!!!! and quite inexpensive all u can eat huge buffet for $6 for lunch and $8 for dinner, and the prime rib was out of this world, so many wonderful delights to choose from, Talk about some of the things I miss ----- well thats one of them, I used to enjoy going there for a treat once every two weeks, the other place I miss going to is Sam's Town, Casino, I used to go there every Thursday afternoon from 1pm to 3pm to see the live variety show put on for the locals, WOW it was great entertainment and it was always free!!!!
I also miss escaping up to Mt Charleston in the middle of the long hot summer, you leave Vegas at say 112f. and drive 45 minutes up in the mountains and the Temp changes to mid 70's WOW what a nice relief that was to spend the day up there hiking around, or some times me and a lady friend would rent a nice secluded cabin for the weekend and just ----- chill out and kick back,
And I suppose I could name quite a few things I miss about Las Vegas and America in general even if I thought about it,
But to be very honest as far as Im concerned the things I like about living in England far far outnumber what I miss in the USA
But I lived 36 years of my life in America, all my youth, so you cant just switch off somewhere that was your home for all that time,

I did not know you lived in Vegas? Hmmmmm $13 for dinner at the Suncoast Casino Huh!!!! so now i suppose if I were still living there I would only be able to afford the lovely Buffet once a month instead of every two weeks :) ;)

I would say the Suncoast is still one of the best places for value for money and still one of the cheapest.

I have found eating out here really expensive, I came on holiday in 2008 to Vegas and found eating out good value for money and that was on the strip. Not now, I carn't affort to eat on the strip at all.:(

I've two years to go before we come home, one year done. Suffering the heat at the moment, combined with the rain storms:(

Oh yes now I remember a little while ago you told us that your husbands job there is only for 3 years, OK so you have two more years left and this is your first year in Vegas, when you told us I was thinking OMG they are going to hate the Vegas heat in the Summer being used to the British weather, ---- well tell me, ------ we are now half way through July and Im sure you have had a lot of 100f weather, so what do you think? will you be able to stick it out for 2 more years? but I think August is actually hotter then July when it gets to a steady 112 to 115 every day, and Sept and October can be sizzlers too, anyway good luck!!!!!
But WOW I am sooooo happy that I dont ever have to live through a desert Summer again :)

I have to stick out the extra two years I don't have a choice, unless I leave without my husband:( I wish I felt different about here, as it really is a fantastic oppotunity and I should be making the most of it.

We have had a week of 114f and oh my god, give me the UK weather anyday over the heat. We have just recently come back from 3 weeks hols in the UK and it rained nearly everyday, but I didn't care.

I am trying to make the most of it and I'm very lucky that I have UK friends here, and I know I am going home in two years with a job for my husband.

The trouble is at the moment the kids are on the stupidly long school holidays, 11 bl***y weeks:frown: Most of my friends are in the UK, my husbands at work, the kids are stuck in because of the weather, most US kids are in summer clubs, which I can't affort. I'm slowly going mad and so are the kids.

But try telling that to my friends back in the UK, I'm in Vegas what am I moaning about:blink:

When I first went to Vegas (1976) you could have any meal on the strip for just a few dollars, cheap meals were a big incentive to get you into the Casino's, over the years those cheap meals have gone away, at least on the strip, there are less gamblers visiting Vegas these days, so they have to make money wherever they can...

If you are ever looking for a nice steak, give the Silverado a try, its in the South Point Casino, we really thought it was a great meal when we went last May, and cheaper than steakhouses on the busy part of the strip, of course its no $13...

I am very lucky to have a number of UK friends in Vegas, I can't imagine what it must be like to be stuck in a country that you don't want to be, made worst by the fact you have no like minded friends around.

I still have to keep the fact I want to go home to myself around my UK friends as they all love it here! This makes me feel as if there is something wrong with me. I am trying to make the most of it, we go places and socialize as much as possible.

Thats why I come on here, one to know I'm not odd for wanting to be in the UK and secondly to hear of all the nice return stories from Sally, Jasper and others.

I like to know that some people have managed to get home and I do hope someday Fish that it happens for you as well.

Wow Im amazed that you have met British friends in Vegas, I was living in Vegas for 14 years and I did not meet a single Brit anywhere, it got to the point that I thought I was the only Brit living in Vegas :frown:
But of course knowing that the population of Vegas was over 2 million I thought there must be at least one other Brit somewhere :p
How did you meet your English friends? I would like to know, am interested,

Home is..........

No like minded Friends, that really is the tough one, my wife and I understand each other but outside of that I have to phone or skype relatives in the UK to get that kind of understanding/mentality, we grew up English and are still very much in that frame of mind, Luckily I still have e-mail contact with my best of 40 years, that helps a lot, we have a lot in common and exchange info a few times per week.

Isn't it funny how some people really love it here, I can understand you keeping this to yourself, there is nothing wrong with you, we all have different likes and dislikes, Until I found this forum I thought I was a bit ungrateful, it was such a relief to find other like mined people.

When we arrived in America we were one of thirty families in this small Rocky Mountain town, we would have British get together's at first, but that all changed over time, we like to socialize and you cant live in a bubble after all, everyone moves on, some families returned to the UK almost straight away, others like me slowly moved away, now there are very few of the original British families left in that town, some have retired to the UK some retired to other parts of America...

I'm glad you have decided to make the best of it, America may not be home but still its not a bad place, I would never say it was, its just that people here are in a different place mentally, many are ignorant of what lies beyond its borders and can only see things the American way, that's a shame... Even so I'm sure you will take back some good memories, there is lots of beauty, I hope you get to travel and see some of it...

I think I will go back at some point, its the one thing I cant get out of my system, I know what I need to do...

Thanks Fish

Fish, you made very fair observations there.

For some, being back is wonderful. For us being back is something to have got out of our system, as was going overseas in the first place. Both places have been good to us.

Hello Shelley.

I know you will enjoy the UK in August, We've been back for so many weddings over the years, There is nothing quite like a wedding in the UK, 4 weddings and a funeral comes to mind, I love that film, it really takes me back, Ive had many Saturdays like that.

Zero kids here too, not by choice, I think that would have changed our lives in a good way as then we would have got to know lots more people...

Be sure to take your Dad out for a ride in the Country and a pub meal, as they get older they tend to stop in and people get tired of asking them to go out, so push him around a bit, in a nice way of course... He will thank you for it later...

The Lottery, Oh boy you and us both, a few hundred thousand $$$ would really change our lives, a nice little bunglow in the UK and we'd be set, Ive never wanted to win big as we dont need lots of money to make ours a good life, but these days I see so many people I could help, Id really love to spread it around with people that have been good to me over the years, I think Id enjoy helping others as long as they were not too greedy. (End of Dream)...

Thanks for checking in Shelly, Enjoy your Trip Home...

Just stopping in to share a photo. I took my mum away for the weekend for her birthday. We took a trip down memory lane and spent the weekend up in the Yorkshire Dales - our holiday place of choice when I was a kid. She took me on the most amazing drive on the way up there, all through the Dales up and over the wild moors - really into James Herriott country. I shot this panorama from Park Rash, looking from Wensleydale back into Wharfedale and pieced it together once we got back. (it's big so may take a while to load)

If you are ever looking for a nice steak, give the Silverado a try, its in the South Point Casino, we really thought it was a great meal when we went last May, and cheaper than steakhouses on the busy part of the strip, of course its no $13...

I never went into the South point Casino Fish, you say a good steak there dont cost $13 ----- so is it more or less?

Fish Im glad you found a nice place for a good steak in Vegas, so many choices, $26 though is kind of expensive,
Locals normally avoid the strip like the plage when they go out to eat, mostly cause of the high prices,
They prefer a smaller local Casino where the service is better and the people are more of a working middle class, and down to earth and more friendly,
and the gambling is normally better too, and you cant get lost in them like you can in a huge strip Casino,
My favorite place for a really excellent steak was the Gold Coast Casino, its on West Flamingo road just a mile from the strip, walking distance!!!! right across the road from the Palms Casino, ----- so my favorite at the Gold Coast was a nice big Sirloin Steak, on menu just before I left Vegas was $8.95 it came with a baked (jacket) potato & Veggies, and a nice ice cold glass of draft beer of your choice, ----- I would tip the waiter $2 and so for $11 for the whole meal including the tip aint at all bad is it?
There are lots of steaks on the menu, the Rib eye or new york was a couple of dollars more thats all, and always including the glass of beer :)
And you will not find a better steak anywhere, always a good cut of steak, always lean and always cooked just how you like it!!!! and always so very tender and so tasty straight from the open fire grill,
and the little walk back to the strip is nice too ;)

And if you want the absolute best and biggest prime rib in town and you have your car with you ---- then you just have to drive a few miles to North Las Vegas to Jerry,s Nugget ----- inside the casino everyone heads straight to the Jerry,s famous coffee shop and a 10 ounce prime rib with a big baked potatoe and choice of french bread or garlic bread, also choice of soup or salad included in the price of $7.85 or if your really hungry pay a couple dollars more and you get a huge 16 ounce that feels the entire plate, they have to bring the baked potato sour cream & butter on a separate plate,

Or if you prefer there Steak & shrimp special for $9.89 including choice of soup or salad, thats really great too,
You will not find a better meal (anywhere) on the strip, or better tasting!!!!
The service is fantastic and they have a huge selection of deserts & cakes & pies all baked on the premises along with all there bread,
They have a very large menu with every kind of entre that you can imagin, and all the prices are so inexpensive, a couple can dine out at Jerry,s Nugget for $30 and have a wonderful meal for two that would include desert and wine, and the prices are still the same as when I last ate there in November 2010 just before I came home.
Take care,
Rodney.

Somehow I got this clip sent to me from Utube and its about Doc Martin and its called Separate Lives. I think some of it is from the yet to be released series because I don't recognize most of it.

Really nice.

Re: OVER 50's & 60's Chit-Chat & Daily Catch-Up Thread

I have a favorite story about a Brit who came to Las Vegas to get married. She checked into one of the biggest and luxurious hotels. She unpacked her wedding dress and since they are long she looked for someplace to hang it. She saw what looked like a handy hook on the ceiling that looked perfect for the dress and she hung it there. Unknown to her this "hook" was the fire sprinkler system. Maybe after she left the room the sprinklers went off, but anyway the end result is she had to pay for all the water damage to the room and the room below her room plus pay for the loss of use of the room while it was repaired. I would be sick if that happened to me. I think they charged her $3000. A lot of strange things happen on wedding days.

I also found a very good extra cut prime rib for $8.95. It's available 24/7.
It came with a baked spud and veggies and a pint of rather decent British type beer from the in-house micro brewery. It's called Ellis Island on Koval Lane, a block south of The Strip. It's right next door to a large but dumpy Super 8 motel. Not the flashiest joint in town but great value and what I thought was a really decent pint.
I usually go there when I have the misfortune to be in Vegas en route to wherever.

That would be 'East' of the strip and around Flamingo probably?? It could have been knocked down by now? How recent did you go there?

Yes, you are correct, Koval runs off Flamingo.
It's been a couple of years I suppose since I was there so maybe it is no longer. A pity. It was great value.
